Միջին տարիքը պետք Է երկարացնել ինը տարով, իսկ ծերությունը հաշվել սկսել ոչ թե 65-ից, այլ 74-ից: Այս պնդումը տեղ Է գտել նոր հետազոտության մեջ: Կիրառական համակարգային վերլուծության միջազգային ինստիտուտի (ԿՀՎՄԻ) գիտնականները պնդում են, որ ծերությունը պետք Է որոշել ոչ թե բացարձակ տարիքով, այլ այն բանով, թե որքան Է (նկատի Է առնվում տվյալ երկրի երկրի միջին ցուցանիշը) մա րդուն մնացել ապրելու: Նոր հետազոտությունը հրապարակվել Է PLoS One հանդեսում, իսկ դրա մասին համառոտ հաղորդում Է The Telegraph-ը:

Գիտնականների կարծիքով՝ ծերությունն սկսվում Է այն ժամանակ, երբ մարդուն մնացել Է ապրել 15 տարի կամ դրանից պակաս: Բեբի-բումերի (1945-1960-ական թվականներին ԱՄՆ-ում եւ Եվրոպայում ծնվածները) սերնդի համար դա նշանակում Է, որ մինչեւ 74 տարեկանն նրանք համարվում են միջին տարիքի մարդիկ: «Ծերության վերաբերյալ պատկերացումները ժամանակի հետ փոխվում են:

Քսան տարի առաջ 60 տարեկանները համարվում Էին շատ ծեր մարդիկ: Իսկ այժմ նրանք, ըստ իս, պարզապես հասուն մարդիկ են»,-հայտարարել Է հետազոտության ղեկավար ժողովրդագիր Սերգեյ Շչերբովը: Նա նշել Է, որ ապագայում տարեց մարդիկ ավելի ու ավելի շատ են հիշեցնելու ժամանակակից երիտասարդներին:Ըստ գիտնականների հաշվարկների, միջին տարիքի եւ ծերության միջեւ նրանց կողմից առաջարկված սահմանը թույլ Է տալիս դանդաղեցնել Եվրոպայի բնակչության մեջ ծերերի բաժնի աճը:Հետազոտողներն ընդգծում են, որ 60 տարեկաններն արդեն ազգականներից կախված հիվանդներ եւ աշխատանքի անընդունակ մարդիկ չեն, եւ պետական կառույցներն այդ փաստը պետք Է նկատի առնեն կենսաթոշակային տարիքը հաշվելիս:

Մեծ Բրիտանիայում, օրինակ, այն կազմում Է 65 տարի, բայց արդեն մինչեւ 2030 թվականը կառավարությունը պլանավորում Է այն բարձրացնել մինչեւ 68 (սկզբնապես այդ չափը սահմանել Էին 2046 թվականի համար):Մյուս գերոնտոլոգների ու սոցիոլոգների կարծիքով, ծերությունն այժմ, անտարակույս, ավելի ուշ Է սկսվում, քան հարյուր կամ նույնիսկ հիսուն տարի առաջ: «Ներկայիս 70 տարեկաններն իրենց 50 տարեկանի պես են զգում:

Բայց չպետք Է ծերության սկսվելու  կոնկրետ տարիք նշանակել: Մեծ Բրիտանիայում հարուստների եւ աղքատների միջեւ կյանքի տեւողության տարբերությունը կազմում Է ինը տարի, իսկ առողջ կյանքի տեւողությունը՝ ամբողջ 19»,-նշել Է Ալան Ուոքերը՝ Շեֆիլդի համալսարանից:
