Ամերիկացի գիտնականները պարզել են, որ համբույրները՝ որպես ռոմանտիկ զգացմունքների եւ սեռական ցանկության դրսեւորման եղանակ, տարածված են մարդկային մշակույթների կեսից քիչ մասում: Ինչպես տեղեկացնում Է «Արմենպրես»-ը, հետազոտության արդյունքները հրապարակվել են American Anthropologist հանդեսում:

«Չնայած համբույրների հաճախակի պատկերմանը նյութական մշակույթի զանազան նմուշներում, մենք չենք գտել մարդու համար ռոմանտիկ-սեքսուալ համբույրների ունիվերսալության վկայություններ: Ռոմանտիկ-սեքսուալ համբույրները բնորոշ են հետազոտված մշակույթների պակաս մասին (46 տոկոս)»,- իրենց հոդվածում գրել են Խուստին Գարսիան Բլումինգտոնի Ինդիանայի համալսարանից  եւ նրա գործընկերները:

Նրանք օգտագործել են ավելի  վաղ կատարված հետազոտությունների արդյունքները, որոնք ընդգրկել են ամբողջ աշխարհի 168 մարդկային մշակույթներ: Գարսիան եւ նրա գործընկերները պարզել են, որ Ասիայում ռոմանտիկ համբույրները տարածված են մշակույթների 73 տոկոսում, Եվրոպայում՝ 70 տոկոսում, Հյուսիսային  Ամերիկայում՝ 55 տոկոսում, Օվկիանայում՝ 44 տոկոսում, Հարավային  Ամերիկայում՝ 19 տոկոսում, Աֆրիկայում՝ 13 տոկոսում:   

Կենտրոնական Ամերիկայում ընդհանրապես չեն եղել մշակույթներ, որոցում ընդունված լիներ համբուրվելը, իսկ Միջին Արեւելքում, ընդհակառակը, եղել Է 100 տոկոս: Ռոմանտիկ զգացմունքներն արտահայտելու համար համբույրների օգտագործման մասին վկայություններ չկան նաեւ Սեւ Աֆրիկայում, Նոր Գվինեայում եւ Ամազոնիայում: Ընդամենը 168 մշակույթներից 77-ում են առկա եղել ռոմանտիկ համբույրները:

Գիտնականները նաեւ նշում են, որ այն մշակույթներում, որտեղ համբույրներն ընդունված չեն, համբուրվող մարդկանց տեսքը ոչ միայն կարող Է անսովոր լինել, այլեւ տհաճ ու վանող, հաղորդել Է ՏԱՍՍ-ը:
