Լիբիան Իտալիայի հարավային ափերից բաժանող Սիցիլիական նեղուցում վերջին մեկ օրվա ընթացքում Իտալիայի սահմանապահ ծառայությունը համակարգել է մոտ 4,4 հազար ներգաղթյալի փրկելուն ուղղված գործողություններ: Ինչպես նշում է իտալական սահմանապահ ծառայությունը, դա բացարձակ ռեկորդ է, հաղորդում է The Independent-ը: 

Ներգաղթյալների անօրինական տեղափոխումը կազմակերպողները հավանաբար օգտվել են ծովում լավ եղանակային պայմաններից և ծով են ուղարկել ներգաղթյալների՝ գերծանրաբեռնված և ծովի համար չնախատեսված նավերով:  

Ընդհանուր առմամբ իրականացվել է 22 գործողություն սահմանապահ ծառայության նավերի, Իտալիայի ռազմածովային ուժերի նավերի և սահմանների հսկողության եվրոպական «Տրիտոն» առաքելության մասնակցությամբ:  

Այժմ փրկվածները տեղափոխվում են տարբեր իտալական նավահանգիստներ:
Այս տարվա ընթացքում մոտ 110 000 ներգաղթյալ է փրկվել Լիբիայի ափերից և հասցվել Իտալիայի հարավային ափ:  

Այս տարի սպասվում է, որ ռեկորդային թվով ներգաղթյալներ կփորձեն հատել վտանգավոր Միջերկրական ծովով ճանապարհը Եվրոպա հասնելու համար: 

Միգրացիայի միջազգային կազմակերպության տվյալների համաձայն՝ առնվազն 2000 մարդ է զոհվել այս տարի Միջերկրականը հատելու ճանապարհին:
