Շոտլանդացի 16-ամյա Էմի Թոմսոնը, իսկական աստղ էր իր հասակակիցների մեջ: Գեղեցիկ արտաքինով աղջիկը հաճելի էր շփման մեջ, դրա համար էլ հանրահայտ էր, և մեծ ճանաչում էր վայելում: Բայց մի պահ նրա ամբողջ կյանքը կտրուկ փոխվեց:

Այդ ճակատագրագան օրը Էմին որոշեց հանգստանալ գիշերային ակումբում, իր երեք ընկերուհիների հետ: Պարահրապարակում նրանց մոտեցավ մի անծանոթ տղա և առաջարկեց նրանց փորձել նոր զգացողություններ ունենալ: «Սա ընդամենը էքստազի է»,- ասաց նա, և աղջիկներին տվեց մի քանի թափանցիկ կապսուլաներ՝ լցված սպիտակ փոշիով: Աղջիկները գայթակղվեցին այդ առաջարկով և ընդունեցին այդ խորհրդավոր նյութը:

Ընդամենը մի քանի րոպե անց աղջիկներն այնքան վատացան, որ չորսն էլ ուշագնաց եղան: Շտապ օգնությունը նրանց հիվանդանոց տարավ, որտեղ արվեցին բոլոր անհրաժեշտ գործողությունները: Առավոտյան երեք աղջիկները ուշքի եկան, բայց Էմիի վիճակը միայն ավելի էր վատանում: Նա ընկավ կոմայի մեջ:

Անհայտ դեղահաբերի ընդունման պատճառով, Էմիի ուղեղի աշխատանքը խախտվել էր: Մեկ շաբաթ շարունակ աղջիկը գտնվում էր կյանքի և մահվան արանքում… Վերջապես նա դուրս եկավ կոմայից, բայց հետևանքները շատ լուրջ էին: Էմիի ոտքերն ամբողջությամբ կաթվածահար է եղել, նա հազիվ է կարողանում շարժել ձեռքերը և ամեն բառը մեծ դժվարությամբ է արտաբերում: Բժիշկները ենթադրում են, որ աղջիկն ամբողջ կյանքում այդպես կմնա…

Այդ ընթացքում ոստիկանությունը ձերբակալել էր թմրանյութեր տարածող երեք կասկածյալների՝ 33-ամյա տղամարդ և 17-ամյա ու 18-ամյա հանցակիցներ: Ոստիկանությունը ձերբակալել է նրանց Էմի Թոմսոնին թունավորելու համար, և ճշտվում է նրանց տարածած դեղահաբերի բաղադրությունը:

Սակայն այդ փաստը չի մխիթարում Էմիի ծնողներին: Այդ ամենը իրենց սիրելի աղջկան իր հին կյանքին չի վերադարձնի…

Նրա հարազատները ցանկանում են, որ բոլորն իմանան, թե ինչ վտանգ կարող է իրենից ներկայացնել ընդամենը մեկ դեղահաբը:
