О круговороте. "Отцу народов" очень понравился фильм Джона Форда "Потерянный патруль" 1934 года о злоключениях 12 британских солдат в пустынях Месопотамии во время Первой мировой войны. В 1936 году Михаил Ромм снял свой первый полнометражный фильм "Тринадцать" - ответ империалистам. До подхода своих 10 красноармейцев плюс жена командира и учёный геолог удерживают колодец в пустыне от басмачей и белогвардейцев. Воды в колодце самая малость: пара глотков на брата и на охлаждение максимов. Противнику с превосходящими в десятки раз силами тоже необходима вода. На этой нехитрой коллизии Ромм снял очень добротный по монтажу фильм. "Тринадцать" так понравился американскому режиссеру Золтану Корде, что в 1943 он снял пропагандистский фильм "Сахара" с тем же сюжетом, с Хамфри Богартом в главной роли, с действием британцев и американцев против немцев в ливийской пустыне, без единой женской роли и тремя номинациями на Оскара...

Мне было интересно, как в двух очень разных культурах поставлены сцены переговоров, цель которых затянуть время и отвлечь противника в боевые действия за ресурс-приманку. У красноармейцев Ромма есть надежда, что свои подойдут, - командир посылает гонца. У американцев нет такой надежды, шанс выжить один из ста, но есть принцип - поступай, как правильно, и будь, что будет, - и пуританский providence их не подвел. Во время последнего боя снарядом в песке пробило новый водоносный колодец, и немцы, ошалевшие от жажды и потерявшие жесткого командира, приняли условие американцев: сдали оружие в обмен на воду. У американцев немцы "лиса пустыни" Роммеля выведены карикатурно, особенно в римейке 1995 с Белуши в роли танкиста.

В технике блефа и военных хитростей разницы почти никакой, если таковыми не считать игру на балалайке и гармошке. Основной визуальный обман создаётся постановочной сценкой обливания водой, разыгранной бойцами на заднем плане переговоров. На самом деле воду они льют не на землю, а в ведро, которое видит зритель, но не противник.
