Աշխարհում ամենամեծ նավթի պաշարներ ունեցող երկրներից մեկը՝ Վենեսուելան, կանգնած է տնտեսական կոլապսի մեջ հայտնվելու վտանգի առաջ: Երկրի բյուջեի 96 տոկոսը նավթի և նավթամթերքի արտահանումից ստացվող եկամուտն է կազմում:Նախկինում, երբ նավթի գինը համաշխարհային շուկայում բարձր էր, Վենեսուելայի իշխանությունները կարողանում էին քողարկել երկրում առկա տնտեսական ձախողումները: Այդ իսկ պատճառով երկար ժամանակ երկրում չեն զարգացել շուկայական հարաբերությունները, չի ձևավորվել նաև փոքր ձեռներեցությունը, իսկ իշխանությունները սահմանափակումներ են մտցրել երկրում վաճառվող ապրանքների գնային քաղաքականության հարցում: Այս ամենի հետևանքով երկրում «զարգացել է» մաքսանենգությունը և ավելացել ապրանքների դեֆիցիտը:

 Վենեսուելայում դեֆիցիտ է համարվում նույնիսկ զուգարանի թուղթը, որի համար մարդիկ պետք է ժամերով և օրերով հերթ կանգնեն: Երկրի ղեկավարությունն այս ընթացքում պետական նավթահումքային արտադրությամբ զբաղվող ընկերությունները վերահսկելով է զբաղված եղել, իսկ երկրի նավթային արտադրությունում այլ ներդրողներ ի հայտ չեն եկել, որի հետևանքով ոլորտն այնքան էլ չի զարգացել: Այդ իսկ պատճառով էլ նավթից և նավթամթերքից ստացվող եկամուտը վերջին տասը տարվա ընթացքում աճելու փոխարեն նվազել է կրկնակի, իսկ համաշխարհային շուկայում նավթի գների աննախադեպ անկումը երկրի տնեսության համար դարձել է կործանարար: Եթե անցյալ տարի 1 դոլարի փոխարժեքը սև շուկայում կազմում էր 100 բոլիվար, ապա ներկայումս լավագույն դեպքում այն հնարավոր կլինի գնել 800 բոլիվարով, այն դեպքում, երբ դոլարի պաշտոնական փոխարժեքը երկրում կազմում է 6,3 բոլիվար: Այդ գնով Վենեսուելայում ամերիկյան արտարժույթ ձեռք բերելն անհավանական է համարվում: Երկրի պաշտոնական տվյալների համաձայն՝ գնանկումն այս տարվա ընթացքում կարող է կազմել 160 տոկոս: Որքան էլ, որ պարադոքսալ թվա, բայց Վենեսուելայի կառավարությունը ցանկություն ունի բարձրացնել երկրի ներսում վաճառվող բենզինի գինը: Տեղի վարորդներն ասում են, որ ներկայում Վենեսուելայում վաճառվող բենզինը չնայած օդից էլ էժան գին ունի, բայց այդ վառելիքի գինը թանկացնելու դեպքում բնակչությունը կարող է էլ ավելի վատ վիճակում հայտնվել:
