 Ջոն Հոփքինսի համալսարանի վիրաբույժները կատարել են ՄԻԱՎ-ով ախտահարված մահացած հիվանդի լյարդի եւ երիկամի առաջին փոխպատվաստումը երկու հիվանդների, որոնք նույնպես ՄԻԱՎ-ի վարակակիրներ են: Վիրահատությունն իրենով նշանավորել է իմունային անբավարարությամբ մարդկանցից օրգանների փոխպատվաստման 25-ամյա արգելքի ավարտը: Այս մասին, ինչպես տեղեկացնում է Արմենպրեսը, հաղորդել Է Los Angeles Times-ը:        

ՄԻԱՎ-ով ախտահարված օրգանների փոխպատվաստումն առաջին անգամ իրականացվել Է 1988 թվականին, երբ ուժի մեջ մտավ նման վիրահատություններն արգելող օրենքը: Այն չեղյալ հայտարարվեց սոսկ 2013 թվականին՝ կառավարության կողմից HOPE (HIV Organ Policy Equity Act) ծրագրի հավանության արժանանալուց հետո, որը հույս դարձավ ՄԻԱՎ-դրականով բազմաթիվ հիվանդների համար, որոնք փոխպատվաստման կարիք ունեն:  

Բժիշկների խոսքով՝ վիրահատությունից հետո հիվանդներն իրենց լավ են զգում: Նրանցից մեկը, նոր երիկամ ստանալով ՄԻԱՎ-ով վարակվելուց 30 տարի անց, դուրս Է գրվել հիվանդանոցից: Բժիշկները դեռ հսկում են երկրորդ հիվանդի ինքնազգացողությունը, որի օրգանիզմում փոխել են հեպատիտից քայքայված լյարդը, սակայն անալիզները ցույց են տալիս, որ պատվաստված օրգանը կանոնավոր Է գործում:
