Հայկական վարժարանն ու բարեգործական ակադեմիան Կալկաթայի՝ ժամանակին ծաղկուն հայ համայնքի թագի թանկարժեքն քարն են: Այս մասին գրում է The Indian Express-ը:

«Այստեղ տղաները վառ գույնի համազգեստով ֆուտբոլ են խաղում: Միջանցքներում աղջիկները գեղեցիկ շրջազգեստներով շտապում են դասի: Ընդմիջման ժամանակ երեխաները հերթ են կանգնում ճաշարանում: Բայց այս դպրոցը տարբերվում է երկրի մյուս բոլոր դպրոցներից»,- գրում է հնդկական պարբերականը:

Կալկաթայի Հայկական վարժարանն ու բարեգործական ակադեմիայի հայր Զավեն Յազիչյանը պատմում է, որ երկու դար շարունակ տարբեր երկրներից հայ պատանիներն այստեղ են եկել՝ ձգտելով հաջողություններ ունենալ ուսման մեջ: Անցյալ շաբաթ դպրոցը նշեց հիմնադրման 195-ամյակը: Տոնական միջոցառմանը շուրջ 100 մարդ մասնակցեց, որոնցից 60-ը Կալկաթայում բնակություն հաստատած Հնդկաստանի առաջին հայերի վերջին ներկայացուցիչներն են:

«Հայերը միշտ բաց են եղել տարբեր մշակույթների համար: Ահա թե ինչու ենք մենք հազար տարվա ընթացքում կարողացանք գոյատեւել Հնդկաստանում»,- ասում է Զավեն Յազիչյանը:

1940-ականներին շուրջ 2 հազար մարդուց կազմված համայնքում հիմա մինչեւ 60 հայ ընտրող է գրանցված:

Հնդկաստանում հայերի պատմությունը կապ չունի անգլիացիների, մոնղոլների կամ նույնիսկ պորտուգալացիների նվաճումների հետ: Հայերն Արեւմտյան Ասիայից այստեղ են եկել միայն առեւտրի նպատակով: «Մենք գաղութարար չէինք: Մենք այստեղ ենք փոխադրվել մոնղոլներից շատ առաջ»,- պատմում է Զավեն Յազիչյանը:

Հայկական վարժարանից եւ բարեգործական ակադեմիայից երկու րոպեի հեռավորությամբ, ըստ պարբերականի, քաղաքի եւս մեկ տեսարժան վայր կա՝ Թագավորական առանձնատունը Փարկ Սթրիթում: Գոթական ոճի ճակատամասով շենքը, կարծես, հիշեցում է բրիտանական Կալկաթայի անցյալի մասին: Բայց պատմաբանը ձեզ այլ բան կփաստի. «Շենքն իրականում Գալստյանների առանձնատունն է եղել, որը կառուցվել է քաղաքի հայտնի հայ ընտանիքներից Գալստյանների կողմից: Նրանք հարուստ գործարարներ էին»:

Կալկաթայի մեկ այլ հանրահայտ տեսարժան վայր է The Grand Hotel-ը (ներկայում՝ Oberoi Grand), որը կառուցել է հայ գործարար Հարություն Ստեփանը:
