Համաշխարհային պատմության ամենահանդուգն ու խելահեղ ռազմական արշավանքներից մեկը, որը կատարել էր հին աշխարհի ամենատաղանդավոր զորահրամանատարներից մեկը' կարթագենցի Հանիբալը....
Համաշխարհային պատմության մեջ ամեհահետաքրքիր և «խենթ» ռազմական արշավանքներից մեկը կազմակերպել է կարթագենցի երիտասարդ զորավար Հանիբալը: Այդ ժամանակ Կարթագենի հավերժական թշնամի Հռոմը Հանիբալի հոր Համիրկալի հետ մղված կռիվներում կարողացավ գերիշխանություն հաստատել ամբողջ միջերկրածովյան ավազանում, և կարթագենյան հզոր նավատորմը ուղղակի անզոր էր այդտեղ: Հանիբալը լինելով խիզախ զորհրամանատար, դրա հետ մեկտեղ փայլուն ռազմավարական ունակությունների տեր անձնավորություն էր: Նա որոշեց կատարել անհնարինը'Հյուսիսային Աֆրիկայից անցնել Ջիբլարթարի նեղուցը մտնել Պիրենեյան թերակղզի (Իսպանիա) և ցամաքով շարժվելով անցկացնել իր զորքը Ալպերով և կռիվ տալ հռոմեացիների դեմ հենց Ապենինյան թերակղզում:

Մ.Թ.Ա 218թ նա սկսեց իր արշավանքը: Արշավանքին մասնակցում էին 90 հազար զինվորներ: Նրանց զինուժի մաս էին կազմում ձիեր ինչպես նաև փղեր: Անցնելով Ջիբլարթարը, մտնելով Պիրենեյներ և շարունակելով ճանապարհը նրանք հանդիպեցին Ռոն գետի արգելքին: Հսկայական գետը նրանք կարողացան անցնել մի քանի մակույկներ պատրաստելով (յուրաքանչյուրը մոտ 60մ): Հանիբալի զորքերը այնուհետև հասան Ալպերին: Թվում է, թե Ալպյան լեռնաշղթան պետք է անանցանելի արգելք լիներ ձիերով և փղերով համալրված զորքի համար, այնուամենայնիվ Հանիբալի ինժեներների հնարամատության շնորհիվ հնարավոր եղավ ժայռերի մեջ անցքեր անել, այնուհետև կրակի և հատուկ նյութերի օգնությամբ հալեցնել քարե զանգվածը, որը իր հերթին թույլ տվեց ճանապարհներ բացել: Նրանք կարողացան անցնել նաև Ալպերը և մտնել Հյուսիսային Իտալիա: Հյուսիսային Իտալիայում սկզբնական հաջողություններ գրանցելով Հանիբալի զորքը Մ.Թ.Ա 216թ Իտալական Կան քաղաքի մոտ հանդիպեց Պիրենցե Բարոնի հրամանատարության տակ գտնվող հռոմեական 90 հազարանոց զորքին:

Տեղի ունեցած ճակատամարտում դրսևորվեց կարթագենցի զորավար ամբողջ տաղանդը, ով կարողացավ խորամանկել և ծուղակի մեջ դնել հռոմեական զորքին: Արդյունքում հռոմեական 90 հազարանոց զորքից ողջ մնաց միայն 3,5 հազար զինվոր: Այդ հաղթանակից հետո, սակայն Հանիբալը չկարողացավ որևէ օգուտ քաղել, քանի որ նրա զորքը բավականին հոգնել էր: Նա կարողանում էր հաղթել հռոմեացիներին առանձին ճակատամարտերում, սակայն բազմաթիվ փորձերից հետո այդպես էլ չկարողացավ գրավել Հռոմը: Մ.ԹԱ. 206թ Հռոմը անցավ հարձակման և ստիպելով Հանիբալին դուրս գալ Ապենինյան թերակղզուց պատերազմական գործողությունները տեղափոխեց Հյուսիսային Աֆրիկա:
