Մամուլի ազատության օրվա (մայիսի 3) առթիվ ԱՄՆ-ն քննադատել է Թուրքիայում մամուլի ազատության վիճակը։ ԱՄՆ պետքարտուղարության խոսնակ Ջոն Քիրբին իր ամենօրյա ճեպազրույցի ժամանակ անդրադառնալով Թուրքիայում մամուլի ազատության վիճակին ու նշել, որ Թուրքիան «ճիշտ ուղով չի ընթանում» եւ դրա մասին իերնք նախկինում էլ խոսել են:

«Մենք նախկինում էլ ասել ենք, որ այն միտումը, որը տեսնում ենք Թուրքիայում, լավը չէ: Նա ճիշտ ուղղությամբ չի ընթանում: Ես դա գնահատել եմ մտահոգիչ եւ հիմա էլ այդպես եմ գնահատում: Չենք կարծում, որ ազատության սահմանափակումը նորմալ է ցանկացած ժողովրդավարության համար, այդուհանդերձ, մենք դեռ հավատում ենք, որ Թուրքիան կարող է շարժվել ժողովրդավարական սկզբունքներով, որոնք ամրագրված են այդ երկրի Սահմանադրության մեջ: Մենք ցանկանում ենք տեսնել Թուրքիայի առաջընթացն այդ հարցում: Մենք չենք հավատում, որ հաջողության ուղին լրատվամիջոցների դեմ ոտնձգություններն ու սահմանափակումներն են եւ այդ մասին բազմիցս ասել ենք»,-նշել է Քիրբին:

Նա ընդգծել է, որ այդ հարցը պատրաստվում են բարձրացնել Թուրքիայի առաջնորդների հետ հանդիպումների ժամանակ: Քիրբիի խոսքով, Թուրքիան ԱՄՆ-ի համար կարեւոր գործընկեր է, հետեւաբար մամուլի ազատության հարցում կցանկանան տեսնել այդ երկրի հաջողությունը:
