ԱՄՆ-ի մարտական կորուստները, սկսած 2001 թվականի սեպտեմբերի 11-ից՝ Նյու Յորքում Առեւտրի համաշխարհային կենտրոնի վրա ահաբեկչական գրոհի օրվանից, կազմել են ավելի քան 5 հազար մարդ: Ինչպես տեղեկացնում է «Արմենպրես»-ը, այս թիվը ներկայացրել է երկրի զինված ուժերի շտաբների պետերի կոմիտեի նախագահ Ջոզեֆ Դանֆորդը՝ մայիսի 30-ին Առլինգտոնի ազգային գերեզմանատանը ելույթ ունենալով ծաղկեպսակներ դնելու ար արողությանը: Վաշինգտոնի մերձակա այդ գերեզմանատանը Անհայտ զինվորի գերեզմանին, որտեղ հանգչում են ավելի քան 300 հազար զինծառայողների աճյուններ, ծաղկեպսակ Է դրել նաեւ ԱՄՆ-ի նախագահ Բարաք Օբաման:

«2001 թվականի սեպտեմբերի 11-ից սկսած 5 հազար մարդ է սպանվել մարտում»,- ասել է նա: Հիշատակի օրվա իր ելույթում Դանֆորդը նշել է, որ ընդամենը երկրի հիմնադրման օրվանից նրա համար իրենց կյանքն են տվել ավելի քան մեկ միլիոն մարդ:

Հիշատակի օրն ամերիկացիներն առաջին անգամ նշել են 1868 թվականի մայիսի 30-ին՝հարգանքի տուրք մատուցելով Հյուսիսի եւ Հարավի միջեւ քաղաքացիական պատերազմում զոհվածների հիշատակին: Այն ժամանակ ծաղիկներով Էր զարդարվել Առլինգտոնի գերեզմանատանը թաղված 20 հազար զինվորների գերեզմանները: 1971 թվականին Հիշատակի օրը հայտարարվեց համազգային հանգստյան օր:

Հիշատակի օրն ամերիկացիները հիշում են այն բոլոր պատերազմների մասնակիցներին, որոնք վարել Է Միացյալ Նահանգները՝ Հյուսիսի եւ Հարավի միջեւ քաղաքացիական պատերազմից մինչեւ Իրաք եւ Աֆղանստան: Վիետնամում զոհվել են 58 հազար ամերիկացիներ, Կորեայում՝ 54 հազար, Իրաքում՝ շուրջ 4,5 հազար, Աֆղանստանում՝ ավելի քան 2,2 հազար ամերիկացիներ: Երկրորդ համաշխարհային պատերազմի ռազմաճակատներում մարտնչել են 16 միլիոն ամերիկացի զինվորներ եւ սպաներ, նրանցից 406 հազարը տուն չի վերադարձել: ԱՄՆ-ի համար ամենաարյունահեղը եղել Է 1861 – 1865 թվականների քաղաքացիական պատերազմը, որը շուրջ 620 հազար մարդու կյանք խլեց, հաղորդել Է ՏԱՍՍ-ը:
