ԶԼՄ-ները համարվում են ներկայիս քաղաքական կյանքի կարևորագույն ատրիբուտը, հաճախ նրանց անվանում են «Իշխանության չորրորդ ճյուղ»:

Հասարակությունը քաղաքական կյանքին տեղեկանալու համար օգտվում է թերթերից և առնցաց ԶԼՄ-ներից: ԶԼՄ-ները համարվում են հասարակություն-քաղաքական գործիչներ կապի միջնորդ: Եվ ԶԼՄ-ները հաճախ օգտվելու այս առիթից կարող են տաբեր տեղեկություններ հրապարակել՝ ճշմարիտ և սուտ:

Իրենց հրապարակումներում ԶԼՄ-ները հաճախ լույս են սփռում գաղտնի տեղեկություններ, որոնք կապ ունեն քաղաքական գործիչների հետ, աշխարհում տեղի ունեցող իրադարձությունների վերաբերյալ, դրանով իսկ հասարակության ուշադրության կենտրոնում հայտնվելով նրանց գործունեության առավել օդիոզ կողմերը: Առհասարակ, ԶԼՄ-ներն ազդեցիկ գործիք են համարվում հասարակության հոգեբանության վրա ազդելու հարցում: ԶԼՄ-ները համարվում են համաշխարհային քաղաքականության մեջ հզոր զենք: Եվ այս զենքը նրանք կարող են օգտագործել տարբեր կերպ:

Վերջին ժամանակներում ԶԼՄ-ների գործունեության մեջ ավելացել է ևս մեկ տարը, որը նրանց դարձնում է ավելի հանրաճանաչ՝ չափազանցության տարր՝ ապատեղեկատվություն տարածումը:

Հասարակության կարծիք վրա ազդելու գործում մեծ դեր է խաղում ապատեղեկատվությունը: Ապատեղեկատվություն տարածելը, կամ հրապարակման մեջ չափազանցության տարր ներառելը, սենսացիոն վերնագրեր տպագրելը նպատակ է հետապնդում սեփական վարկանիշը բարձրացնելով մոլորեցնել հասարակությանը, մանիպուլիացիայի ենթարկել:

Տեղեկատվական պատերազմում բամբասանքները, սեփական աղբյուրներին հղում կատարելը շատ է օգտագվործվում: Բամբասանքների կամ սեփական աղբյուրներին հղում կատարելու միջոցով ԶԼՄ-ները հասարակությանը մղում են որոշակի գնահատականներ, եզրակցություններ անել, տվյալ թիրախի հանդեպ բարկությամբ լցվել:

Հաճախ ԶԼՄ-ները պետությունը թշնամու կերպարներ են կերտում, որի դեմ պետք է ժողովրդավարության չափանիշներին համապատասխան պայքարել: Կարող են ստեղծել ընդդիմության համար զոհի, իսկ իշխանության համար ագրեսորի կերպարներ ու այստեղ օգտագործվեն բազմաթիվ զենքեր՝ իրադարձությունները խեղաթյուրելով, առասպելներ հորինելով:

Ստեղծվում է «տաք պատերազմի» կամ «տաք հեղափոխության» կերպար, երբ իրականում ընդդիմությունը ուղիղ առճակատման չի գնում իշխանությունների հետ, սակայն ԶԼՄ-ներում այլ կերպ է այս ամենը ներկայացվում, իսկ սա կարող է նպաստել «տաք հակամարտության» զարգացման:

ԶԼՄ-ները, սովորաբար, պետք է անկախ լինեն, նրանց վրա չպետք է քաղաքական ազդեցություն լինի: Նրանք չպետք է իրենց բաժին հասած չափազանցության տարրն օգտագործեն ապատեղեկտավություն տարածելու համար, չէ՞ որ հասարակությանը վստահությունն են վայելում: Հասարկությունը կարծում է, որ տեղեկատվությունը ստանում է առաջին ձեռքից, բայց, ավաղ, դա ոչ միշտ է այդպես:
