Ըստ տարածված ստուգաբանության, այն ծագել է ռուսերեն «рабочее искусство» արտահայտությունից (կարդացվում է՝ ռաբոչեե իսկուստվո), որը նշանակում էբանվորական արվեստ։ Այլ տեսությունների համաձայն, ունի թուրքական կամ արաբական ծագում ։ «Ռաբ» բառը արաբերենում նշանակում է ստեղծող կամ աստված, իսկ «ազիզ» բառը՝ սիրելի։

Սա «ռաբիս» բառի բառարանային ստուգաբանությունը: Բայց կա նաև ժողովրդական ընկալումը, որը ձևավորվել է կարծրատիպերի հիման վրա:

Ռաբիս երգիչների և այդ երգերի սիրահարների մասին տարածված են մի շարք կարծրատիպեր, որոնք վերաբերում են այդպիսի մարդկանց արտաքին տեսքին, կենսաոճին և մտածելակերպին։

Դրանց շարքում են

  • Նյութականի մեծ կարևորություն,
  • Բացառապես սև հագուստ, մասնավորապես նեղ, բարձրակրունկ և սուր ծայրով («ծիծակ») կոշիկներ,
  • Ժարգոնային լեզու՝ մեծ թվով ռուսերեն բառերի խառնուրդով
  • Դոմինանտ արական սեռի հատկանիշներ կամ ընդգծված կանացիություն

Այսօր ձեզ համար առանձնացրել եմ հայ հայտնիների, ում դեմքին նայելիս միակ բանը, որ մտածում ես «ինչ ռաբիս տեսք ունի»-ն է:
