Ֆիլմը սկսվում է Լուիզիանայի ծերանոցներից մեկում բնակվող Պոլ Էջկոմբի (Թոմ Հենքս) կյանքի պատմությունը, ով արդեն 108 տարեկան է։ Նա լաց էր լինում դիտելով Ցիլինդրա ֆիլմը, իսկ իր ծեր ընկերը Էլեյնին անհգաստություն է հայտնում վարքագծի վերաբերյալ և Պոլն նրան պատմում է այն մասին, թե ինչ է պատահել իր հետ շատ տարիներ առաջ, երբ նա աշխատում էր «Սառը լեռ» անվանում ունեցող բանտի մահվան դատապարտվածների բաժնում որպես պահապան։ Այնտեղ բոլոր բանտարկյալները մահապարտներ էին և սպասում էին իրենց դատավճռի ի կատար ածմանը, որն արվում էր էլեկտրական աթոռի միջոցով։ Ճանապարհին, որ տանում էր դեպի էլեկտրական աթոռի սենյակ, պատված էր կանաչ ծածկով, և այդ ճանապարհը հենց դատապարտվածների կողմից անվանվել էր «կանաչ մղոն»։

Ռիզվան Կխանը հնդիկ մուսուլման է, տեղափոխվել է Սան Ֆրանցիսկո և ապրում է իր եղբոր և նրա կնոջ հետ։ Ռիզվան, ով տառապում է Ասպերգերի համախտանիշով, սիրահարվում է Մանդիրային։ Չնայած իր եղբոր դեմ լինելուն, նա ամոսնանում է և իր կնոջ հետ մի փոքր բիզնես սկսում։
Նրանք ապրում են երջանիկ մինչև 2001 թվականի սեպտեմբերի 11-ը, երբ ահաբեկչության պատճառով մուսուլմանների նկատմամբ վերաբերմունքը կտրուկ փոխվում է։
Որդու ողբերգական մահից հետո, Մանդիրան ընկնում է հոգեկան ծանր ապրումների մեջ և ամուսինների հարաբերությունները վատթարանում են։ Խիստ զայրացած և հուսալքվաց լինելով Մանդիրան պահանջում է Կխանից գնալ Միացյալ Նահանգների նախագահի մոտ և նրան ասել՝ «Իմ անունը Կխան է, և ես ահաբեկիչ չեմ»
