Մասնագետները պնդում են, որ ձիթապտղի ու արեւածաղկի յուղերը թուլացնում են նորածինների մաշկի բնական պաշտպանական հատկությունները: Նման եզրակացության են հանգել Մեծ Բրիտանիայի Մանչեսթերի համալսարանի փորձագետները: Նրանք պնդում են, որ խոնավացնելու նպատակով նորածինների մաշկին ձիթապտղի կամ արեւածաղկի յուղ քսելը բավականին տարածված պրակտիկա է մանկաբարձների շրջանում:

Նորածնի մաշկի վրա ձիթապտղի կամ արեւածաղկի յուղը քսելու դեպքում թուլանում է մաշկի պաշտպանական շերտը, որն արգելափակում է ինֆեկցիաների ու ալերգենների ներթափանցումը, նաեւ՝ կանխում ջրազրկումը: Հետազոտության ընթացքում մանկաբարձները 115 նորածինների երեք խմբերի են բաժանել: Առաջին խմբում երեխաներին ձիթապտղի յուղ էին քսում, երկրորդում՝ արեւածաղկի, իսկ երրորդում՝ առհասարակ ոչ մի յուղ: 28 օր շարունակ առաջին երկու խմբերի նորածինների մաշկի փոքրիկ տարածքները մշակում էին մի քանի կաթիլ ձեթով:

Այնուհետեւ հետազոտողները ուսումնասիրել են երեխաների մաշկի պլաստիկ կառուցվածքն ու պարզել, որ առաջին երկու խմբերում մաշկի պաշտպանական շերտի զարգացումն ու դրա աշխատանքը դանդաղել էր՝ հսկիչ խմբի համեմատ: Սա վկայում է այն մասին, որ նորածնային մաշկի բնական պաշտպանական հատկությունները խախտվում են այդ յուղերի ազդեցությունից: Մասնագետները զգուշացնում են, որ այդ յուղերը կարող են մաշկային խնդիրների՝ օրինակ, էկզեմայի զարգացման պատճառ դառնալ:
