xn + yn + zn + … = tn տեսակի հավասարումները հայտնի են շատ վաղուց։ Սակայն դրանց լուծման ունիվերսալ մեթոդը դեռևս չի հայտնագործվել։ Հայտնի է միայն այն, որ այսպիսի յուրաքանչյուր հավասարում կարող է ունենալ կա՛մ անվերջ, կա՛մ էլ սահմանափակ քանակով լուծումներ։ Բերչը և Սվիներթոն-Դայերը ստեղծել են մի մեթոդ, որի համաձայն՝ այսպիսի յուրաքանչյուր հավասարում կարելի է բերել ավելի պարզ տեսքի՝ դարձնելով ձետա-ֆունկցիա։ Եթե այդ ձետա-ֆունկցիան 1 կետում հավասար է 0-ի, ապա կան անվերջ լուծումներ և հակառակը։ Սակայն դեռևս ոչ ոք չի կարողացել ապացուցել կամ հերքել այդ հիպոթեզը։

Սթիվեն Կուկը այսպիսի մի հարց է տվել՝ «Կարո՞ղ է խնդրի լուծումների ճշտության ստուգումը ավելի երկար տևել, քանի հենց խնդրի լուծումը՝ անկախ օգտագործվող ալգորիթմից»։ Դեռևս ոչ ոք չի կարողացել նմանատիպ խնդիր ստեղծել, սակայն դրա ստեղծումը իսկական հեղաշրջում կառաջացնի ծածկագրման ոլորտում։

Որևէ առարկա հետազոտելուց առաջ մաթեմատիկան փորձում է այդ առարկան տրոհել փոքրիկ «դետալների»։ Սակայն այդ մեթոդը միշտ չէ, որ աշխատում է. երբեմն նոր մասեր են առաջանում կամ կորում են հին մասերը։ Իր աշխատությունների մեջ Հոդջը նկարագրել է պայմաններ, որոնց առկայության դեպքում այդպիսի ավելորդ մասեր չեն առաջանում, և յուրաքանչյուր օբյեկտ կարելի է հետազոտել որպես մաթեմատիկական հավասարում։ Նրա հիպոթեզը չեն կարողանում ապացուցել կամ հերքել արդեն 70 տարի շարունակ։
