Բայց Օբամայի մասին իր նոր գրքում կենսագիր Դեյվիդ Գերոուն հաղորդում է, որ Միշելն իրականում ամենևին էլ առաջին կինը չի եղել, ում համար Օբաման պատրաստ էր կյանքը տալ։

1986 թվականին Օբաման խնդրել է Շեիլա Միյոշի Ջագերի ձեռքը։

Այս նորությունը զարմացրել է ամերիկացիներին՝ նրանց ստիպելով մտածել, թե ինչ կլիներ, եթե ԱՄՆ առաջին տիկինը Միշելի փոխարեն այդ կինը լիներ, և արդյոք Օբամային կհաջողվե՞ր այդքան առաջ գնալ, եթե կողքին սպիտակամորթ կին լիներ։ Համենայն դեպս, նա ինքը այդ կարծիքին չէ։

Ջագերը, ով այժմ դասավանդում է Օբերլինում, Գերոուին պատմել է, որ Օբաման նախագահ դառնալու մտադրություն ունեցել է դեռ այն ժամանակ, երբ չէր էլ սկսել իր քաղաքական կարիերան։ Գերոուն տալիս է երիտասարդ Օբամայի պատկերը, ով զգում էր, որ Ամերիկայի առաջին սևամորթ նախագահը դառնալը իր նպատակն է, որին հասնելու համար պատրաստ է շատ զոհաբերությունների։

Ջագերը, ով ապրել է Օբամայի հետ ու մի քանի տարի փոքր է նրանից, հիշում է ապագա նախագահի տանջանքները՝ իր կյանքի գլխավոր նպատակին՝ փառքի ու համբավի հասնելու համար։

Իրենց հարաբերությունների ընթացքում Օբաման Չիկագոյում համայնքի կազմակերպչական հարցերով էր զբաղվում։ Հարվարդ մեկնելուց մի քանի օր առաջ ամուսնության առաջարկ արեց Ջագերին, բայց Ջագերը, ով Սեուլում սովորելու պլաններ ուներ, հասկացավ, որ Օբամայի պլանները չպետք է իր սեփական պլաններից ավելի կարևոր լինեն, և մերժեց առաջարկը։

Օբաման Բոստոն գնաց առանց նրա, որտեղ հետո համալսարանում լավ առաջադիմություն ցուցաբերեց ու դարձավ Harvard Law Review-ի նախագահը։

Այնտեղ անցկացրած իր առաջին ամռանը նա հանդիպեց երիտասարդ Միշել Ռոբինսոնին։ Երբ նրանք սկսեցին հանդիպել, կարճ ժամանակ անց Ջագերը եկավ Հարվարդ՝ դասավանդելու։ Նախկին սիրո կայծը մի պահ կրկին վառվեց, ինչի համար, ինչպես Ջագերն է նշում, նա միշտ վատ է զգացել։

1992-ին Միշելն ու Բարաքն ամուսնացան, որից հետո Ջագերը հազվադեպ լուր ստացավ նրանից՝ մի անգամ սեպտեմբերի 11-ի ահաբեկչական հարձակումներից հետո, մի անգամ էլ ճշտելու համար՝ արդյոք կենսագիրը գտե՞լ է նրան։
