Օգոստոսի 1-ից 7-ը Առողջապահության համաշխարհային կազմակերպությունը հայտարարել է երեխաներին կրծքով կերակրելու օրեր: Փաստերը ցույց են տալիս, որ կրծքով կերակրումը թե՛ նորածնի և թե՛ մոր առողջության և իմացական զարգացման համար օգտակար է: Այն հատկապես կարևոր է երեխայի ծնվելուց մինչև առաջին վեց ամիսների ընթացքում, քանի որ օգնում է կանխել լուծն ու թոքաբորբը, որն աշխարհում հանդիսանում են մանկական մահացության երկու հիմնական պատճառները: Մայրերի մոտ ձվարանների և կրծքի քաղցկեղի ռիսկը նվազում է, որը կանանց մահացության երկու առաջատար պատճառներից են:
 
Աշխարհի 190 երկրներում կատարված ուսումնասիրությունները ցույց են տվել, որ վեց ամսակնաից ցածր տարիք ունեցող երեխաների միայն 40 տոկոսն է կերակրվում բացառապես կրծքի կաթով:
 
 
Ուսումնասիրված երկրներից միայն 23 տոկոսի դեպքում է երեխային կրծքով կերակրելու ցուցանիշը եղել 60 տոկոսից բարձր: Հաշվարկները ցույց են տվել, որ յուրաքանչյուր նորածնի հաշվարկով տարեկան անհրաժեշտ է ընդամենը 4.70 ԱՄՆ դոլարի ներդում իրականացնել, որպեսզի մինչև 2025 թվականը վեց ամսականից ցածր երեխաների շրջանում բացառապես կրծքով կերակրման համաշխարհային ցուցանիշը հասնի 50 տոկոսի:
 
Այս ցուցանիշին հասնելու շնորհիվ կփրկվի հինգ տարեկանից ցածր 520,000 երեխայի կյանք և 10 տարվա ընթացքում կստեղծի 300 բիլիոն ԱՄՆ դոլարի տնտեսական շահ, քանի որ կկրճատվի հիվանդությունների թիվը, պահանջվող առողջապահական ծախսերը և կբարձրանա արդյունավետությունը:

Տեդրոս Ադհանոմ Ղեբրեյեսուսն իր ելույթի ժամանակ նշել է, որ կրծքով կերակրման շնորհիվ երեխաներն ունենում են կյանքի հնարավորինս լավ սկիզբ, քանի որ այն նման է երեխայի առաջին պատվաստմանը՝ պաշտպանում է մանուկներին մահացու վարակներից և նրանց տրամադրում սնուցում, որն անհրաժեշտ է գոյատևելու և ճիշտ զարգանալու համար:
