ԱՄՆ դեսպան Միլսի հարցազրույցը սվիններով ընդունվեց: Ազատություն ռադիոկայանին տված հարցազրույցում դեսպանը հնչեցրել էր մի շարք ուշագրավ մտքեր, որոնք սահուն կերպով տեղավորվում էին դրանից առաջ Մինսկի խմբի արդեն նախկին համանախագահ Հոգլանդի հայտարարության կոնտեքստում: Միլսը մասնավորապես նշել էր ՝ «Պարզորոշ ասել ենք, որ մեր նպատակն է համոզված լինել, որ Հայաստանը կարող է իր ինքնիշխան որոշումները կայացնել, թե որ ուղին է ընտրում, որ տնտեսական, քաղաքական մոդելն է ընտրում: Մենք ցանկանում ենք Հայաստանին գործիքներ տալ՝ շարունակելու կայացնել ինքնիշխան որոշումներ և վստահ լինել, որ Հայաստանը մյուսների կողմից ճնշման չի ենթարկվի՝ հետևելու մի ուղու, դեպի ուր Հայաստանը չի ցանկանում գնալ»: 

Շատերն այս հայտարարությունը համարեցին միջամտություն Հայաստանի ինքնիշխանությանը: Նույն պատմությունն էր ԵՄ դեսպան Սվիտալսկու հայտնի հայտարարություններից հետո, երբ սեփական դրամաշնորհների արդյունավետ ծախսման հետ կապված դեսպանը «համարձակվեց» ճշտումներ պահանջել հայաստանյան իշխանություններից: Հիմա էլ նույնը ԱՄՆ դեսպանի դեպքում. երբ ԱՄՆ-ն դրամաշնորհներով ու այլ ճանապարհներով օգնում է Հայաստանին ու Արցախին, դա նորմալ է ընկալվում, դա չի համարվում միջամտություն ինքնիշխանությանը: Երբ ԱՄՆ-ն որպես այլընտրանք ներկայացնելով հայկական կողմը մուկն ու կատու է խաղում ռուսների հետ, դա ևս միջամտություն չէ: Երբ համապատասխան քաղաքական կամքի առկայության դեպքում խոստացվում են ռեալ էներգետիկ բարեփոխումներ ու ներդրումներ, դա ևս միջամտություն չէ:

Բայց, երբ այդքանից հետո հանկարծ համարձակվում են Հայաստանին սթափեցնող կոչով դիմել, դա դառնում է միջամտություն: Իսկ ուղերձը հետևյալն է ՝ մենք գիտենք, որ ռուսական կողմից ահռելի ճնշում կա ձեր վրա, նաև հասկանում ենք, որ դժվար է դիմանալ այդ ճնշմանը, բայց եթե ակնկալում եք մեր օգնությունը, ապա պիտի հստակ հասկացնեք այդ մասին, հստակ քայլերի գնաք, քաղաքական կամք ցույց տաք, նաև պատրաստ լինեք կռիվ տալ: Հենց սա էլ զայրացնում է իշխանությանը, որը այս պահին որևէ քայլի պատրաստ չէ: Բազե 2017-ում Սերժ Սարգսյանը հայտարարում է, որ պետք է պայմանավորվել, փոխզիջել, հակա ու ընդդեմ կարգախոսներով չառաջնորդվել: Այլ կերպ ասած՝ պետք է ոչինչ չանել, որևէ պոզիտիվ ու սեփական օրակարգ չունենալ ու կողմնորոշվել ըստ իրավիճակի: Եվ այս իմաստով դեսպանի հայտարարությունը բնականաբար ցավոտ է ՝ նա կպնում է մեր իշխանության ամենաթույլ տեղին, ովքեր վտանգը տեսնելով մեռած են ձևանում կամ դեպրեսիայով տառապող հիվանդի նման պարկում մահացածի դիրքով ու որևէ բան չեն անում ՝ որպեսզի չսխալվեն: 

ԱՄՆ-ն հիմա ավելի ագրեսիվ է սկսել Ռուսաստանի դեմ պատժամիջոցներ կիրառել ՝ դրանք սրելով այնքան, որ նույնիսկ Եվրոպայում կան դժգոհություններ: Կոնֆրոնտացիան ենթադրում է հստակություն բոլոր ճակատներում, այդ թվում ՝ Հայաստանում: Հայաստանը պետք է կողմնորոշվի, վաղ թե ուշ: Իսկ եթե չկողմնորոշվի, ապա արտասահմանյան դեսպանների նման սթափեցնող ապտակները հաճախակիանալու են: Ի վերջո գերտերությունների դեսպանները տիրապետում են ոչ միայն օպերատիվ ինֆորմացիայի, այլև հայաստանյան իշխանության թույլ և ուժեղ կողմերին:
