Ներկայիս Հոնդուրասի, Հարավարևելյան Մեքսիկայի, Գվատեմալայի տարածքները նախկինում զբաղեցրած, Կենտրոնական Ամերիկայի հնագույն մշակույթներից մեկը ստեղծած ցեղը մայաներն են: Նրանց քաղաքակրթության սկիզբը դրվել է մ.թ.ա. I դարում: Իրենց գոյության ընթացքում մայաները գրի են առել պատմական մի շարք իրադարձություններ, կառուցել են քարե պալատներ, տաճարներ, աստղադիտական քաղաքներ: Այս ամենի հետ մեկտեղ պահպանել են իրենց առասպելների ու ավանդույթների մեծ մասը:

Մայաների առասպելներից մեկը նվիրված է Սեյբա ծառին, որն աճում է տիեզերքի կենտրոնում: Մարդիկ բնակվում են բնի մակարդակի բարձրության վրա, ծառի կատարը երկնքում է գտնվում, իսկ արմատները տանում են դեպի ստորգետնյա թագավորություն: Երբ մարդը մահանում է, նրա հոգին ծառի բնով կա՛մ վերև է բարձրանում՝ դեպի երկինք, կա՛մ իջնում է դեպի արմատները: Խորհրդավոր ու կախարդական ծառի կատարին ապրում է աստվածային թռչունը, որը երկնային արքայություն մուտք գործելու խորհրդանիշն է համարվում:

Մայաների առասպելաբանության մեջ երկինքը պահում են տիեզերքի չորս անկյուններում կանգնած չորս աստվածները, որպեսզի այն հանկարծ չընկնի երկրի վրա: Այդ աստվածներն ունեն խխունջի, կրիայի, իգուանայի և օպոսումի տեսք: Տիեզերքի կազմության մեջ էին մտնում 9 ստորգետնյա աշխարհներն ու 13 երկինքները, իսկ երկնքի աստվածները մշտական պատերազմի մեջ են գտնվում ստորգետնյա հրեշների դեմ:

Մայաների գլխավոր աստվածներից մեկը Իցամնան էր, որը ներկայացվում էր երկնային վիշապի տեսքով: Իցամնան համարվում էր աշխարհի ստեղծողը, գրերի գյուտարարն ու առաջին քուրմը: Իսկ Իցամնայի կինը Իշչելն էր, ով լուսնի աստվածուհին ու բժշկության, ծննդաբերության ու ջուլհակության հովանավորն էր: Նրա համար մայաները գեղեցիկ աղջիկներ էին զոհաբերում, իսկ հնդկացիները երկրի տարբեր անկյուններից գնում էին նրա սրբավայրեր՝ բժշկվելու:

Մայաներն ունեցել են առասպելների ու միֆերի յուրահատուկ ժողովածու, որը կոչվում էր «Պոպոլ Վուխ»: Այս գրքի մասերից մեկում խոսվում է Շբալանկե և Հունահպու երկվորյակ եղբայրների մասին, ովքեր ստորգետնյա ճանապարհորդության էին մեկնել: Ճամփորդության սկզբում երկվորյակները գնդակով սուրբ խաղ են խաղում մեռյալների արքայության տիրակալների հետ և հաղթանակ են տանում: Չար աստվածները նրանց սարսափազդու տանջանքների են ենթարկում, սակայն հերոս եղբայները դիմակայում են տրված բոլոր փորձություններին:

Հիշեցնենք, որ մայաներն են արել շոկոլադի ու ծխախոտի գյուտերը: Նրանք հայտնագործել են շոկոլադն ու փոխանցել այն ացտեկներին: Իսկ ծխախոտի տերևներից պատրաստված քսուքներով բուժում էին վիրավորներին ու հիվանդներին:
