Ցանկացած մարդ «մաֆիա» բառը յուրովի է հասկանում, սակայն մարդկանց մեծամասնությունն այդ երևույթի մասին պատկերացում է կազմել բազում ֆիլմերից ու խաղերից։ Շատ քչերին է հաջողվել ավելի մոտիկից ծանոթանալ մաֆիայի հիերաիխիային, ենթակառուցվածքին և օրենքներին։

Մաֆիան գաղտնի հանցավոր խմբավորում է։ Սկզբնական շրջանում մաֆիան առաջացել է Իտալիայի Սիցիլիա կղզու բնակչության ինքնապաշտպանությունը կազմակերպելու համար։ Մաֆիան դեմ էր դուրս եկել այն կառավարիչներին, ովքեր երկար տարիներ շարունակ ճնշում էին իրենց երկիրը։ Սիցիլիա կղզում տանջանքների միջով անցած բնակիչներն արդեն այդ ժամանակ սովորել էին բերանը փակ պահել, թաքցնել էմոցիաներն ու գիտեին, որ հասարակությունն իրենց ամենավտանգավոր թշնամին էր։ Մարդիկ հիասթափվել էին կառավարությունից և արդարություն էին փնտրում ազգայնածին տարրի շարքերում՝ մաֆիայում։
