Եկեք պարզենք, թե որտեղի՞ց է ռուսական առասպելաբանությունում հայտնվել ոչ միայն ռուսներին, այլ ողջ աշխարհին հայտնի կերպար Բաբա Յագան:

Պատմաբան և գրող Ա. Իվանովն այս հարցին պատասխան տալու համար հղում է տալիս ուգր-ֆին ազգերի ավանդույթներին: Այս ազգերն արմատներով հասնում են մինչև հեթանոսության ժամանակաշրջան: Նրանք հավատում էին, որ մեռյալներն իրենց օգնում էին այլ աշխարհից ևս, այդ պատճառով էլ հարազատ մարդու մահից հետո «բաբա» տիկնիկներ էին պատրաստում, որտեղ, ըստ նրանց, վերածնվում էր մեռյալի հոգին: Այնուհետև այդ տիկնիկը փաթաթում էին կենդանիների մաշկից առանձնացած մորթիներով, և ինչ-որ կերպ դրանցից պատրաստված մուշտակները սկսում էին կրել կանայք: Այստեղից էլ առաջացել է Բաբա Յագա արտահայտությունը: Այդ ժամանակ տիրում էր մայրիշխանություն, որով պայմանավորված էլ տիկնիկը կնոջ տեսքով էր:

Այն բանից հետո, երբ յագա կոչվող ռուսական ձմեռային վերնազգեստի մեջ փաթաթում էին «բաբային», այն այլ թանկարժեք իրերի և հանգուցյալի իրերի հետ տանում և թաղում էին բնակավայրից հեռու անտառների խորքում: Այնուհետև թաղման վայրերը ծածկում էին շատ փայտերով, որպեսզի կենդանիները չկարողանան հասնել դրան և այլ մարդիկ չկարողանան գողանալ թանկարժեք իրերը: Եվ շատ մարդիկ, որոնք հետաքրքիված էին այդ տիկնիկներով և գնում էին դրանց հետևից, հաճախ հետ չէին վերադառնում, ինչն էլ սարսափ էր հաղորդում Բաբա Յագայի կերպարին:

Կախարդական այս կերպարի մասին հիշելիս շատերը միաժամանակ հիշում են վառարանի մասին, որտեղ իբր Բաբա Յագան շատերին այրում էր: Անհավատալի է, սակայն նման եղանակով իրականում կախարդ-բժիշկները բուժում էին հիվանդ երեխաներին՝ նրանց փաթաթված վառարանում դնելով և հատուկ պրոցեդուրաների ենթարկելով: Դրանից հետո երեխաները պատրաստ էին լինում նոր ու առողջ կյանքի:

Ազգագրագետները հին ցեղերն ուսումնասիրելիս մի հետաքրքիր սովորույթ ևս հայտնաբերել են, որը կոչվում էր «մաքրում կրակի միջոցով»: Ծիսակատարությունն անց էր կացնում ծեր հոգևորական կինը քարանձավում կամ խուլ անտառում, որտեղ դեռահաս տղաներին ստիպում էր «խորհրդանշականորեն» մահանալ, որպեսզի տղամարդու վերածնվեն և ցեղի լիարժեք անդամներ դառնան՝ ամուսնության պատրաստ լինելով:

Բաբա Յագայի կերպարը հայտնի է նաև հեքիաթներում: Հեքիաթագիրներ Վ.Յ.Պրոպը, Վ.Ն.Տոպորովը նշում են. «հերոսը հայտնվում է Բաբա Յագայի խրճիթում՝ նույնն է, թե մեռյալների աշխարհում, «մահանում է», փորձությունների է ենթարկվում և վերածնվում է նոր որակներով: Այդ փոփոխությունն իրականացնում էր Բաբա Յագան:

Ակնհայտ է, որ Բաբա Յագայի բոլոր ատրիբուտները կապված են մահվան հետ: Նա մարդկանց ոչ միայն ահ ու սարսափ էր ներշնչում, այլև մարդկանց գիտակցության մեջ տպավորված էր որպես իմաստուն, բուժակ կնոջ կերպար:
