Շրի Լանկայում ժամանակավորապես արգելափակվել են սոցիալական ցանցերն ու մեսինջերները՝ WhatsApp-ը, Viber-ը, Facebook-ը, Twitter-ը, հաղորդում է Lenta-ն՝ հղում անելով Sri Lanka Guardian-ին: Դա արվել է նախնական տվյալներով 185 մարդու մահվան պատճառ դարձած պայթյունների մասին ապատեղեկատվության տարածումը կանխելու համար:

Ապրիլի 21-ի առավոտյան՝ Կաթոլիկ Զատկի տոնակատարության ժամանակ, երկրում որոտացել են ութ պայթյուններ, որոնցում, վերջին տվյալներով, զոհվել է 185 մարդ, շուրջ 500 մարդ վիրավորվել է: Զոհերի թվում կա 35 օտարերկրյա քաղաքացի:

Երեք պայթյուն է տեղի ունեցել Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand եւ Kingsbury հնգաստղանի հյուրանոցներում, երեքը՝ եկեղեցիներում: Յոթերորդ ռումբը պայթել է Դեհիվալե քաղաքում՝ կենդանաբանական այգու հարեւանությամբ, վերջինը՝ Դեմատագոդա շրջանում:

Տեղի ունեցածի համար դեռեւս ոչ մի կազմակերպություն պատասխանատվություն չի ստանձնել: Ըստ տեղի իրավապահ մարմինների՝ ահաբեկչությունը, հնարավոր է, կազմակերպել են National Thowheeth Jama'ath (NTJ) արմատական մահմեդական միավորման մահապարտ ահաբեկիչները:

Ահաբեկչությունից տասն օր առաջ Շրի Լանկայի ոստիկանապետ Փուջութ Ջայասունդարան անկախ օտարերկրյա հետախուզական ծառայության  տվյալների հիման վրա նախազգուշացրել էր, որ մահապարտ ահաբեկիչները կարող են հարձակում պլանավորել եկեղեցիների վրա:

NTJ-ը արմատական մահմեդական խմբավորում է Շրի Լանկայում, որն ավելի վաղ հայտնի էր բուդդայական հուշարձանների նկատմամբ վանդալիզմի գործողություններով. այն մինչ օրս ահաբեկչության մեջ չէր մեղադրվել:
