Режиссер и сценарист Синтия Као разглядела плагиат в короткометражке «Два далеких незнакомца», которая получила «Оскар» в 2021 году. Сюжет короткометражки, по словам Као, мог быть позаимствован из других фильмов, сообщают «Известия». 

По словам Као, сюжет киноленты о мужчине, который застрял в худшем дне своей жизни, мог быть позаимствован из других картин. Так, в ролике в TikTok она говорит о том, что в 2016 году сняла фильм Groundhog day for a black man («День сурка для черного»), с главным героем которого происходят похожие события: мужчина торопится к матери, но столкновение с полицейским ему мешает, в конце герой понимает, что оказался во временной петле.

Как рассказала Као, в мае прошлого года на фоне протестов в США из-за убийства полицейским темнокожего Джорджа Флойда представители компании Now This News попросили ее опубликовать работу на YouTube, что она и сделала.

В 2020 году продюсер новостного портала NowThis News попросил Као выложить фильм на их канале, где он оказался 31 мая. Уже позже на Netflix состоялась премьера «Двух далёких незнакомцев» Трэвана Фри и Мартина Десмонда Роу, который очень напоминает по сюжету работу Као. А продюсировала фильм компания NowThis. Только по сценарию герой спешит не к матери, а к собаке.

93-я церемония вручения премии «Оскар» состоялась в ночь на 26 апреля. Из-за пандемии коронавирусной инфекции мероприятие с минимальным числом гостей прошло в трех городах — в Лос-Анджелесе, Париже и Лондоне.

Лента «Земля кочевников» стала лучшим фильмом года.
