1971 թվականին Արաբական Միացյալ Էմիրությունների առաջին նախագահ է ընտրվել Աբու Դաբիի կառավարիչ շեյխ Զայեդ բին Սուլթան Ալ Նահյանը, ով կարևոր դեր է խաղացել   էմիրությունները մեկ պետության մեջ միավորելու գործում։ 2004 թվականին նրա մահից հետո այս պաշտոնը ստանձնել է նրա ավագ որդին՝ շեյխ Խալիֆա բին Զայեդ Ալ Նահյանը։ Այն բանից հետո, երբ 2014 թվականին Խալիֆա բին Զայեդ Ալ Նահյանը   կաթված է ստացել, Աբու Դաբիի և ԱՄԷ-ի կառավարիչը իրականում նրա խորթ եղբայրն էր և Աբու Դաբիի թագաժառանգ շեյխ Մուհամմեդ բին Զայեդ Ալ Նահյանը:

Նոր նախագահ Շեյխ Մուհամմեդ բին Զայեդ Ալ Նահյան

Մուհամմեդ բին Զայեդ Ալ Նահյանը ծնվել է 1961 թվականի մարտի 11-ին։ Նա շեյխ Զայեդ բին Սուլթան Ալ Նահյանի և նրա երրորդ կնոջ՝ Ֆաթիմա բինթ Մուբարաք ալ Քեթբիի երրորդ որդին է։ Շեյխ Մուհամմեդն ավարտել է ռազմական օդաչուների դասընթացները ԱՄՆ-ում և Ռազմական ակադեմիան Մեծ Բրիտանիայում։

1990-ականներին եղել է ԱՄԷ-ի զինված ուժերի գլխավոր շտաբի պետը։ Նրա օրոք հավանություն է տրվել երկրում ամերիկյան ռազմաբազաների կառուցմանը, որպեսզի կանխվի Իրանի կողմից հնարավոր հարձակման սպառնալիքը։

2004 թվականին, շեյխ Զայեդ բին Սուլթան Ալ Նահյանի մահից հետո, երբ նրա եղբայր Խալիֆա բին Զայեդ Ալ Նահյանը դարձավ Աբու Դաբիի կառավարիչ և ԱՄԷ նախագահ, շեյխ Մուհամմեդը նշանակվեց Աբու Դաբիի թագաժառանգ և նախագահի հատուկ խորհրդական։   2005 թվականին դարձել է ԱՄԷ զինված ուժերի գլխավոր հրամանատարի տեղակալ և ստացել գեներալի կոչում (ներկայումս ունի գեներալ-գնդապետի կոչում)։

Աբու Դաբիում 2004-2022 թվականներին եղել է Գործադիր խորհրդի նախագահը (էմիրության կառավարչի խորհրդատվական մարմին) և Նավթի բարձրագույն խորհրդի անդամ, ղեկավարել է Տնտեսական զարգացման խորհուրդը, Ներդրումային մարմինը, Ինքնիշխան հիմնադրամը, Կրթության խորհուրդը և Մուբադալա պետական ներդրումային կորպորացիան:

Շեյխ Մուհամմեդի փաստացի իշխանության ներքո 2020 թվականի սեպտեմբերին ԱՄԷ-ն (Բահրեյնի հետ միասին) ԱՄՆ-ի միջնորդությամբ համաձայնագիր է ստորագրել Իսրայելի հետ հարաբերությունների կարգավորման մասին («Աբրահամի համաձայնագիր»։

2019-ին The New York Times-ը շեյխ Մուհամեդին անվանել է ամենահզոր արաբ տիրակալը և աշխարհի ամենահզոր մարդկանցից մեկը: Նույն թվականին նա ընդգրկվել է աշխարհի 100 ամենաազդեցիկ մարդկանց ցուցակում՝ ըստ TIME ամսագրի։

Շեյխ Մուհամմեդ բին Զայեդ Ալ Նահյանն ամուսնացած է Սալամա բինթ Համդանի հետ։ Նրանք ունեն չորս որդի և հինգ դուստր։
