Ուսումնասիրությունը կենտրոնացել է P3TTM անսովոր օրգանական կիսահաղորդչի վրա։ Դրա յուրաքանչյուր մոլեկուլ ունի մեկ չզույգված էլեկտրոն, ինչը ստիպում է նյութին վարվել ինչպես մագնիսը։ Նախագծի վրա աշխատել են Քեմբրիջի երկու թիմեր՝ պրոֆեսոր Հյուգո Բրոնշտեյնի գլխավորությամբ քիմիկոսներ և պրոֆեսոր սըր Ռիչարդ Ֆրենդի գլխավորությամբ ֆիզիկոսներ։ Նախկինում նրանք են ստեղծել այդ միացությունները իրենց պայծառ լուսարձակման համար՝ օրգանական լույս արձակող դիոդների (OLED) համար։ Սակայն Nature Materials-ում հրապարակված նոր ուսումնասիրությունը բացահայտել է անսպասելի մի բան, երբ P3TTM մոլեկուլները սերտորեն դասավորված են, դրանց չզույգված էլեկտրոնները սկսում են փոխազդել միմյանց հետ, ինչպես Մոտ-Հաբարդի մեկուսիչների դեպքում։ Երբ նյութը կլանում է լույսը, էլեկտրոններից մեկը ցատկում է հարևան մոլեկուլի վրա՝ թողնելով դրական լիցք։ Սա ստեղծում է լիցքի բաժանում, և այս կրիչները կարող են հավաքվել որպես էլեկտրական հոսանք։ Սովորական օրգանական արևային մարտկոցներում դա պահանջում է երկու տարբեր նյութեր՝ մեկը նվիրաբերում է էլեկտրոններ, մյուսը ընդունում դրանք։ Սակայն P3TTM-ում ամեն ինչ տեղի է ունենում նույն միացության մեջ։ Էլեկտրոնների փոխանցման էներգիայի արժեքը, որը նկարագրվում է Հաբարդի U պարամետրով, այստեղ նվազագույն է, ինչը նշանակում է, որ կորուստները նույնպես ցածր են։ Ստուգելու համար, թե ինչպես է դա աշխատում, հետազոտողները հավաքել են արևային մարտկոց P3TTM-ի բարակ թաղանթից։ Լուսավորվելիս այն ցույց է տվել լույսից էլեկտրականության գրեթե կատարյալ փոխակերպում. գրեթե յուրաքանչյուր ֆոտոն վերածվել է հոսանքի։ Սա հազվադեպ արդյունք է օրգանական համակարգերի համար։ Քիմիկոս Պետրի Մուրտոն նախագծել է մոլեկուլային կառուցվածքները՝ վերահսկելու դրանց հարաբերական դիրքերը և արդյունավետ լիցքի բաժանման համար անհրաժեշտ ճշգրիտ էներգետիկ հավասարակշռությունը։

Աշխատանքն ունի նաև խորհրդանշական նշանակություն: Իր կարիերայի սկզբում Ռիչարդ Ֆրենդը անձամբ ճանաչում էր Նևիլ Մոտին՝ մի ֆիզիկոսի, որի պինդ մարմիններում էլեկտրոնների վարքագծի վերաբերյալ գաղափարները հիմք հանդիսացան ժամանակակից կիսահաղորդչային ֆիզիկայի համար: Հայտնագործությունը համընկել է նրա ծննդյան 120-ամյակի հետ: «Դա նման է հիմքերին վերադառնալուն, - ասել է Ֆրենդը,– մենք տեսնում ենք, թե ինչպես են հին քվանտային սկզբունքները դրսևորվում բոլորովին նոր տեսակի նյութում, և այժմ մենք կարող ենք դրանք օգտագործել լույս հավաքելու համար»:

Ըստ էության, հետազոտողները ցույց են տվել, որ օրգանական նյութը կարող է ինքնուրույն լիցքեր առաջացնել՝ առանց ավանդական երկու փուլերի բաժանման: Սա պարզեցնում է արևային մարտկոցների ճարտարապետությունը և հնարավոր է դարձնում բարակ, ճկուն և թեթև վահանակների ստեղծումը, որոնք պատրաստված են մեկ նյութից: Եթե նման կառուցվածքների կայունությունը հաստատվի, օրգանական էլեկտրոնիկան հնարավորություն կունենա հասնել նոր մակարդակի՝ որտեղ լույսի և էլեկտրականության միջև սահմանը անցնում է մեկ մոլեկուլի ներսում:
