Ըստ Արիստոտելի՝ պաթոսը որևէ իրադարձություն, գործողություն կամ երևույթ առավել ողբերգական կամ հերոսական ներկայացնելն է, ինչի միջոցով փորձում են ազդել տվյալ միջավայրի վրա, գովեստի կամ ձևական խղճահարության արժանանալ:
Մեզ սովորեցնում են պաթոսով առաջնորդվել դեռևս մանկուց, երբ ստիպում են ինչ-որ բան արտասանել՝ բարձր ու խրոխտ ձայնով, ինքնավստահությամբ, համոզիչ ինտոնացիայով, որոնց մասին մենք գաղափար չունենք, բայց ենթագիտակցորեն ուզում ենք բարձր գնահատվել ու զոռ ենք տալիս պաթոսին: Հետո մի քիչ մեծանում ենք, սկսում ենք խմել ու էլի պաթոսով կենացներ հորինել կամ ասել, որոնք միայն խմելուց են ասվում, իսկ օյաղ վախտ դրանց 90%-ի մասին հիշող չկա:
Եթե մի փոքր շրջապատի տեր կամ էլ չեմ ասում 3-10 հոգու ղեկավար ենք դառնում, սկսում ենք մեզ բոլորից բարձր դասել, լուրջ դեմքով ման գալ, տոներին մի շռնդալից բառապաշարով ուղերձներ հղել, որոնք ոչ մեկի մրգին չեն, որևէ մեկի մահանալու դեպքում հիշում ենք, որ աստված գիտի երբ հաջողացրել ու նկարվել ենք տվյալ մարդու հետ, բայց իրան չենք էլ ճանաչել, կապ չունի, կարևորը պաթոսով մի բան հորինելն ա, որ մարդիկ իմանան դու իրա հետ մոտ էիր եղել, ի վերջո ինքը էլ չկա, որ հակառակը ճշտեն, պաթոսի շնորհիվ մարդիկ պաշտոն են կպցնում, որովհետև իրանք ամենանվիրվածն ու հայրենասերն են, բայց միաժամանակ իրանց պաշտոն տվողին տապոռով կքառատեն, քլունգով էլ էնքան խորը փոս կփորեն, որ էլ գտնող չլինի...
