Արևմտյան քաղաքակրթության ձեռքբերում համարվող արժեքները` ժողովրդավարությունը, ազատ շուկայական հարաբերությունները, իրավունքի գերակայության սկզբունքը, անհատակենտրոնությունը, ամենևին էլ ունիվերսալ, համամարդկային արժեքներ չեն: Ունիվերսալ չեն, քանի որ առաջին հերթին նրանք սկզբնավորվել են կոնկրետ պատմական պահից սկսած, կոնկրետ հասարակության մեջ, կոնկրետ քաղաքակրթական լոկալ տարածություններում:
Եվրոպական համարվող այդ նույն արժեքները ունիվերսալ չեն անգամ նույն Եվրոպայի համար, բայց ոչ թե տարածական, այլ` ժամանակային իմաստով: Օրինակ` ժողովրդավարության ինստիտուտը դժվար է պատկերացնել միջնադարյան եվրոպական հասարակություններում: Եվրոպայում ժողովրդավարության գաղափարի տարածման և հաստատման համար անհրաժեշտ էր նախ «դեսակրալիզացնել», ապա «սրբազանացնել» մարդկանց մտածողությունը: Այսինքն` հարկավոր էր կոտրել այն միտումը, ըստ որի` Աստված է ամեն գոյություն ունեցողի արարիչը, ուստի նաև Տերն է և Հայրը ողջ մարդկության, հետևաբար այն, ինչ տեղի է ունենում մարդկանց կյանքում` Նրա կամքն է ու նպատակադրումները, որոնք մարդու ընկալման համար այդքան էլ հասանելի չեն: Իսկ եթե Աստված է արարել երկրում գոյություն ունեցող ամեն ինչ, ուստի այն, ինչ կա, պետք է լինի այնպես, ինչպես կա: Եթե կա թագավոր, ուրեմն Աստված է կամեցել, որ նա լինի ու իշխի մնացյալի վրա: Եթե միջնադարյան ճորտը ծնվել է որպես հպատակ, ուրեմն Աստծո նախախնամությունն է, որ նա պետք է ծառայի իր տիրոջն ու պատկանի նրան: Միջնադարում գոյություն ունեցող ֆեոդալական կարգերն, այդպիսով, իրենց գաղափարական հումքը ստանում էին հենց Աստծո գոյության և վերջինիս` աշխարհիկ կյանքին ակտիվորեն մասնակցության անքննելիության և աշխարհիկ կյանքի սակռալիզացման գաղափարական պաշարից: Եվրոպային անհրաժեշտ էր ապրել Վերածննդի, Լուսավորականության, Դասական արդիականության փուլերը, պետք էր աշխարհիկացնել մարդկանց մտածողությունը, պետք էր բազմիցս արյուն թափվեր տարբեր ժողովրդական հուզումների արդյունքում, պետք էր երկու համաշխարհային պատերազմներ տեսնել, և նոր միայն գար ժողովրդավարության` որպես հասարակության կյանքի քաղաքական կազմակերպման ամենաարդյունավետ համակարգին:
Իսկ այժմ Արևմուտքը, իր միսիոներական ոգուն համապատասխան, ցանկանում է իր կյանքի փորձով, իր ժողովրդի արյան գնով ձեռք բերված հասունությունը պարտադրել կամ, գուցե, ընդամենը առաջարկել քաղաքակրթական, մշակութային, քաղաքական, սոցիալական, տնտեսական այդ վայրիվերումները ամբողջությամբ չապրած Արևելքին ու նաև մեզ: Եթե մեզ մոտ դեռ եկեղեցին ու եկեղեցականը կարող են քաղաքական ու տնտեսական հարցեր լուծել, եթե մեր ժողովուրդը ընդամենը երկու տասնամյա պետականության կյանք ունի, եթե մեր հայկական հողի վրա սոցիալական անարդարությունների պատճառով մեծ հաշվով դարեր շարունակ ժողովրդական հոզումներ չեն եղել, եթե պետականության բացակայության պատճառով եկեղեցին է լուծել ներհամայնքային հարցերը` այդպիսով մեծացնելով իր ազդեցությունն ու միգուցե ակամայից նվազեցնելով ժողովրդի իրավական գիտակցության ձևավորման հնարավորությունը և, դրան գումարած, բազում այլ և այլ հանգամանքներ, ապա մեր հասարակության ներքին շերտերից բխող փոփոխությունների եվրոպականացման մասին դեռ վաղ է խոսել:
