Հոգեբանության մեջ գոյություն ունի, այսպես կոչված, «Ստոկհոլմյան համախտանիշ» ֆենոմենը: Դրա էությունը կայանում է նրանում, որ զոհը (պատանդ պահվող անձը) ի սկզբանե ագրեսորի (այսինքն՝ պատանդ վերցնողի) նկատմամբ զգում է վախ և հակակրանք, որը հետագայում վերածվում է համակրանքի:
Օրինակ՝ ժամանակի ընթացքում պատանդներն սկսում են ապրումակցել իրենց պատանդ պահողներին և ինչ-որ կերպ նույնիսկ խոչընդոտել իրենց իսկ ազատագրմանն ուղղված գործողությունները: Կարող են նույնիսկ նախկին ագրեսորների և պատանդների միջև առաջանալ ընկերական հարաբերություններ:
Եզրույթն առաջացել է հայտնի դեպքից հետո, երբ 1973 թ. օգոստոսի 23-ին բանտից փախած և զինված հանցագործ Յան Էրիկ Ուլսոնը գերեվարեց Ստոկհոլմի կենտրոնում գտնվող բանկերից մեկի 4 աշխատակիցներին և պահանջեց նրանց ազատագրման համար 4 պայման՝ գումար, զենք, ավտոմեքենա և իր խցակից ընկեր Կլարկ Ուլաֆսոնի ազատագրումը, հակառակ դեպքում նա սպառնում էր, որ կսպանի պատանդներին:
Շատ արագ բավարարվեց պահանջներից մեկը. ազատագրվեց և բանկ բերվեց Կլարկ Ուլաֆսոնը, իսկ «ոչ բախտավոր» (իսկ, միգուցե, բախտավոր) պատանդներին առջևում մնում էր դեռ 5 օր միասին անցկացնել:
Քանի որ Ուլսոնի ոչ բոլոր պահանջներն (չկար զենք, գումար և ավտոմեքենա) արդարացվեցին, նա սկսեց սպառնալ իր պատանդներին` խոստանալով, որ ոտիկանության գրոհի ժամանակ կկախի նրանց: Նա նաև փորձեց ցույց տալ իր որոշումների լրջությունը՝ վիրավորելով և զենքի սպառնալիքի տակ պատանդներից մեկին ստիպեց երգ երգել: Դրությունը լարված էր, բայց հետաքրքիրն այն էր, որ երկու օր անց պատանդների և նրանց գերեվարողի միջև հարաբերություններն սկսեցին փոխվել, իսկ ավելի ճիշտ՝ լավանալ:
Պատանդները սկսեցին քննադատել ոստիկանությանը` պահանջելով դադարեցնել իրենց ազատությանն ուղղված գործողությունները: Պատանդներից մեկը` Քրիսթին Էնմարկը, Ուլսոնի և կառավարության միջև լարված բանակցություններից հետո, անձամբ զանգահարեց Շվեդիայի վարչապետ Ուլաֆ Պալմեին և հայտարարեց, որ ամենևին չի վախենում Ուլսոնից և Ուլաֆսոնից, այլ, ընդհակառակը, համակրում է նրանց և պահաջում է անհապաղ կատարել նրանց պահանջները:
Վերջիվերջո, օգոստոսի 28-ին` լարված վիճակի 6-րդ օրը, ոստիկանները գազային հարցակման շնորհիվ կարողացան ազատագրել պատանդներին: Ուլսոնը և Ուլաֆսոնը հանձնվեցին, իսկ պատանդներն ազատագրվեցին:
«Ստոկհոլմյան համախտանիշ» եզրույթը վերագրում են քրեագետ Նիլս Բեյերոտին: Համախտանիշի մեխանիզմը կայանում է նրանում, որ պատանդի և հանցագործի միջև երկար ժամանակ հարաբերությունները բերում են նրան, որ նրանք ջերմանում են ոչ պարտադրելի շփման ժամանակ, մերձենում են միմյանց հետ, մեկը մյուսին լավ են ճանաչում և նրանց մոտ կարող են առաջանալ ընկերական հարաբերություններ: «Զոհը» սկսում է գիտակցորեն մոտենալ հանցագործի գործողություններին և կարող է մտածել, որ նրա տեսակետը միակն է և ճշմարիտը:
Սակայն այս համախտանիշի դրսևորումը կարելի է նկատել նաև առօրյա կյանքում: Ուժեղների և թույլերի փոխհարաբերությունները, որոնցում թույլերը կախված են ուժեղներից (ղեկավարներից, ընտանիքի գլուխներից և այլն), ինքնին «ստոկհոլմյան համախտանիշի» վառ դրսևորում է: Թույլերի հոգեբանական պաշտպանության մեխանիզմը հիմնավորված է հույսի վրա, որ ուժեղը կդրսևորի ներողամտություն ենթարկման դեպքում:
