Ներկայումս, ուկրաինական հակամարտության շուրջ զարգացումների առավել քննարկվող տարբերակներից է համարվում Ամերիկայի Միացյալ Նահանգների (ԱՄՆ) կողմից Ուկրաինայում «համընդհանուր պատերազմ» հրահրելու հավանականությունը: Միացյալ Նահանգներում քննարկվում են ուկրաինական բանակին զենք մատակարարելու հնարավորությունը, որը անհրաժեշտ է ռուսամետ ապստամբների հարձակումներին արժանի հակահարված տալու համար:
Դրանով ԱՄՆ-ը միայն կթեժացնեն Պուտինի հակաարևմտյան քաղաքականությունը: Եթե նախկինում նա կարող էր միայն ենթադրել, որ Արևմուտքը հրահրում է Ուկրաինայի հակամարտությունը սեփական շահերը պարտադրելու նպատակով, ապա այս դեպքում նրա ձեռքերում կլինի ապացուցված փաստարկ, որպեսզի բացահայտ զորքեր ուղղարկի Դոնեցկ և Լուգանսկ:
Թեև ԱՄՆ կառավարության հայտարարություններում այս զարգացումը լրջորեն դիտարկվում է որպես իրավիճակի լուծում, նման սցենարը, սակայն, արժանացել է Մերկելի բացահայտ քննադատությանը: Կանցլեր Անգելա Մերկելը նշել է, որ չի կարող պատկերացնել մի իրավիճակ, որտեղ ուկրաինական բանակի կողմից ձեռք բերերված արդիական ռազմատեխնիկան նախագահ Պուտինին կստիպի մտածել հնարավոր պարտության մասին:
