Ինչպե՞ս են դիրքորոշումներն ազդում վարքի վրա և, իրենց հերթին, կրում վարքի ազդեցությունը: Այս խնդրին սոցիալական հոգեբնության բնագավառում մեծաթիվ հետազոտություններ են նվիրվել, քանի որ հսկայական է նրա ինչպես տեսական, այնպես էլ գործնական նշանակությունը:
Այս պարադոքսը վերաբերում է խոսքով արտահայտված դիրքորոշման և մարդու իրավական վարքի անհամապատասխանությանը: Խոսքն այն մասին է, որ կան իրադրություններ, որոնցում մարդն իր դիրքորոշմանը համապատասխան չի գործում, և դա պարադոքս են համարում. թվում է, թե այդպես չպետք է լիներ, բայց այդպես է :

20-րդ դարի 30-ական թվականներին ամերիկյան սոցիալական հոգեբան Ռ.Լապյերը ԱՄՆ-ում մի քանի ամիս ճանապարհորդեց ազգությամբ չինացի երիտասարդ ուսանողների ամուսնական մի զույգի հետ: Նրանք հյուրընկալվում էին քեմպինգներում և հյուրանոցներում, ճաշում էին ռեստորաններում և սրճարաններում, ընդ որում՝ միշտ չէ, որ Ռ.Լապյերը ուղեկցում էր նրանց: Այդ երկար ճանապարհորդության ընթացքում միայն մեկ անգամ հրաժարվեցին հյուրընկալել նրանց:
Ճանապարհորդության ավարտից վեց ամիս անց Ռ.Լապյերը նույն այն հաստատությունների տերերին, որտեղ իրենք կանգ էին առել, նամակներ ուղարկեց, որոնցում հարցաթերթիկներ կային: Երկու հարցաթերթիկների մեջ էլ հոգեբանին հետաքրքրողը հետևյալ հարցն էր. արդյոք չե՞ն կարող ընդունել, որպես հյուրերի, չինացիների մի ընտանիք; Առաջին տեսակի հարցաթերթիկում մի քանի այլ հարցեր էին մտցրել տարբեր ազգությունների ներկայացուցիչների մասին, որոնց թվում էր նաև չինացիների վերաբերյալ հարցը: Երկրորդ հարցաթերթիկի մեջ միայն մեկ հարց կար՝ չինացիներին վերաբերողը:
Պատասխաններ ստացվեցին հասցեատերերի մոտավորապես կեսից: Բոլոր պատասխանները բացասական էին. «Ո՛չ, չենք կարող»:
Ռ.Լապյերը նման արդյունքն այսպես էր բացատրում. երևակայական սոցիալական իրադրության վերաբերյալ խոսքով տրվող պատասխանը պայմանավորված է այնպիսի մի «անդեմ» բնութագրով, ինչպիսին ազգությունն է: Մինդեռ իրական պայմաններում մարդու որոշման վրա ազդում են մի շարք լրացուցիչ գործոններ՝ այցելուի ժպիտը, ակցենտի (օտար շեշտադրության) բացակայությունը, հագուստը, ճամպրուկների տեսքը և այլն:
