Նա հաճախ էր ասում. «Ամենաթանկ երևույթը կամավոր զինվորագրված հայ տղան է»: Իր համոզմունքին հավատարիմ՝ Արցախյան ազատամարտի ընթացքում Լեոնիդ Ազգալդյանն իր ջոկատով ազատագրեց 27 գյուղ՝ ընդամենը 6 զոհ տալով:
«Ազատագրական բանակի» յոթերորդ զոհն ինքը՝ հրամանատարն էր:
Լեոնիդ Ազգալդյանը ծնվել է Թիֆլիսում 1942 թ. նոյեմբերի 22-ին:
Դպրոցն ավարտելով Երևանում՝ ընդունվել է Մոսկվայի Լոմոնոսովի համալսարանի ֆիզիկայի ֆակուլտետը, այնուհետև տեղափոխվել Երևանի պետական համալսարան: Ֆիզիկոս, մարզիկ, մտավորական Լեոնիդ Ազգալդյանն Արցախյան շարժման սկզբնավորման օրից մասնակցել է ազգային-ազատագրական պայքարին: Նա առաջիններից մեկն էր, որ շարժման առաջին օրերից համոզված էր, որ այն ի վերջո վերածվելու է պատերազմի, և ձեռնամուխ եղավ նոր զենքերի վրա աշխատելուն: 1990 թ. փետրվարին Աշոտ Նավասարդյանի հետ ստեղծեց «Անկախության բանակն» ու վարեց նրա հրամանատարությունը՝ կազմակերպելով մի շարք շրջանների և հատկապես Վարդենիսի ինքնապաշտպանությունը, մասնակցեց ազատագրական մարտերի, այդ թվում հատկապես Նյուվադիի առաջին գրոհին, իսկ մայիսի 27-ի կայարանի և Սովետաշենի արյունալի սադրանքից հետո ծրագրեց և իրականացրեց խորհրդային պատժիչ զորքերի Երևան ներթափանցման խոչընդոտումը:
Երբ Աշոտ Նավասարդյանը հիմնադրեց Հայաստանի հանրապետական կուսակցությունը, երդվյալ անկուսակցական Լեոնիդն առանձնացավ և 1991թ. հունիսին Հովսեփ Հովսեփյանի հետ միասին ստեղծեց «Ազատագրական բանակը», որը, թեկուզ միայն Հայաստան-Արցախ-Սփյուոք ճիգերի համադրման իմաստով, նոր որակ էր հայ ժողովրդի գոյամարտին ծառայագրված շարժումների շղթայում և որի գլխավոր հրամանատարը մնաց մինչև իր կյանքի վերջը:
«Ազատագրական բանակը» մասնակցել է Արցախի բոլոր կարևոր ճակատամարտերին՝ բացառությամբ երկուսի՝ Շուշիի և Մալիբիլիի: Շուշիի ազատագրման գործողության ժամանակ Լեոնիդի զինվորները պահում էին ամբողջ արևմտյան գիծը, որպեսզի ադրբեջանական զորքերը չկարողանան զորք շարժել դեպի Շուշի:
«Լեոնիդը Նժդեհի գաղափարները կրող եզակի հրամանատարներից էր Արցախյան ազատամարտում, նա միշտ եղել է նախաձեռնողը, ոգի տվողը, կռվել է զինվորի կողքին և ոչ մի անգամ թիկունքից չի հրամայել: Նրա հանճարը գաղափարական էր: Մագնիսը երկու բևեռ է ունենում, բայց Լեոնիդը բազմաբևեռ մագնիս էր. նա ձգում էր տարբեր տեսակի մարդկանց, ու անհասկանալի է, թե ինչպես էր նրան դա հաջողվում: Շատերն էին խնդրում ջոկատում ընդգրկվել, իսկ այնտեղ խիստ կանոններ կային՝ չծխել, չխմել, զենքի հանդեպ միշտ ուշադիր լինել: Բայց կամավորները նրա մոտ էին գալիս»,-հիշում է Ազգալդյանի զինվորներից մեկը՝ Գագիկ Գինոսյանը:
Զինակիցները հիշում են, որ Լեոնիդը միշտ զինվորի կողքին էր՝ նրան հավասար: Նրա ջոկատում երբեք խնդիրներն ուժի կամ կոպտության միջոցով չէին լուծվում: Եղել են դեպքեր, երբ Լեոնիդը, հերթապահության ժամանակ քնած զինվորի նկատելով, ոչ միայն չի պատժել, այլև ուղարկել է քնելու՝ ինքը նրա փոխարեն կանգնելով դիտակետում:
Մի անգամ Լեոնիդի ջոկատի երկու տասնվեցամյա պատանիներ հրացաններով նետվում են մոտեցող տանկին ընդառաջ: Երբ Լեոնիդը նրանց ուժով հետ է բերում խրամատ ու բարկանում, թե ինչպե՞ս կարող են հրացանով տանկի դեմ դուրս գալ, նրանք ասում են, «Երբ Դուք մեզ հետ եք, մեզ թվում է՝ պարսատիկով էլ կարող ենք տանկ ոչնչացնել»:
Երբ Լեոնիդի ջոկատին անդամագրվել ցանկացողներն ասում էին, որ պատրաստ են հայրենիքի համար մեռնելու, Լեոնիդը նրանց չէր ընդունում: «Ինձ մեռնողներ պետք չեն, ինձ ապրողներ ու պայքարողներ են պետք»,- ասում էր նա:
Լեոնիդը համոզված էր, որ ով կորցնի Արցախը, նա կկործանվի. եթե Հայաստանը կորցնի Արցախը, Հայաստանը կկործանվի, եթե Ադրբեջանը՝ ապա այն: Իսկ Արցախը նրանն է, ում պատկանում է Շուշին:
«Երբեք ոչ մեկի ճախրանքը մի´ ընդհատեք»,- ասաց մի անգամ Լեոնիդը, երբ զինվորներից մեկն իր հրացանն ուղղեց սավառնող արծվի ուղղությամբ: -«Եվ մի´ մոռացեք, որ այս թռչունը մեր զինանշանի վրա է»: Լեոնիդի ճախրանքն ընդհատվեց քսան մեկ տարի առաջ՝ 1992 թ. հունիսի 21-ին, Մարտակերտի շրջանի Տոնաշեն գյուղի մոտ՝ թշնամու դավադիր գնդակից:
