«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Վերջին մեկուկես դարի ընթացքում վիսկին լայնորեն տարածվել է ամբողջ աշխարհում՝ դադարելով լինել բացառապես շոտլանդացիների կամ իռլանդացիների խմիչք: Թորման գործարանների աճող քանակի և վիսկիի աճող ժողովրդականության հետ մեկտեղ անհրաժեշտություն է առաջացել ստեղծել վիսկու տեսականու բազմազանության ամբողջական դասակարգում:

Գոյություն ունեն մի քանի դասակարգումներ, որոնք հիմնված են այն բանի վրա, թե ինչ հումք է օգտագործվել, ինչ արտադրության տեխնոլոգիա է օգտագործվել կամ վիսկին կոնկրետ որ երկրում է արտադրվել:

Ոչ մասնագետի համար ամենահարմար դասակարգումը տարածաշրջանայինն է: Յուրաքանչյուր տարածաշրջանում վիսկիի արտադրությունն ունի իր առանձնահատկություններն ու ավանդույթները, և իմանալով դրանք՝ կարելի է կողմնորոշվել խմիչք ընտրելիս: Ներկայում, ըստ այդ դասակարգման, կա չորս տեսակի վիսկի՝ շոտլանդական, իռլանդական, ամերիկյան, կանադական: Կարելի է ակնկալել, որ մի քանի տարի անց ճապոնական վիսկին, որի յուրահատուկ ոճերն արդեն գործնականում ձևավորվել են, նույնպես կհայտնվի այդ դասակարգման մեջ։ Վիսկի արտադրվում է նաև այլ երկրներում, սակայն դրանք արդեն պատկանում են «էկզոտիկ» կատեգորիային։

Շոտլանդական վիսկու՝ սկոտչի հիմնական տարբերակիչ առանձնահատկությունն այն է, որ թորման գործարանների մեծամասնությունը չորացնում է ածիկը մխացող տորֆի վրա, ինչը խմիչքին տալիս է համապատասխան բուրմունք: Արտադրության մեջ օգտագործվում է միայն գարու ածիկ։

Իռլանդական վիսկին շոտլանդական վիսկիից տարբերվում է նրանով, որ ածիկը չորացվում է առանց տորֆի, ինչը ազդում է համի վրա։ Բացի այդ, որոշ վիսկիներ պատրաստվում են գարու և տարեկանի խառնուրդի հիման վրա: Իռլանդական վիսկին ունի քաղցր համ:

Նոր աշխարհում արտադրվող ալկոհոլը շատ է տարբերվում եվրոպական վիսկիից։ Ամերիկյան վիսկիի հիմնական տարբերությունն այն է, որ այն պատրաստվում է հիմնականում եգիպտացորենից, ավելի քիչ՝ այլ հացազգիներից։ Ամերիկայում տակառներում հնեցված վիսկին կոչվում է բուրբոն։ Բացի բուրբոնից, վաճառքում կարելի է գտնել Corn վիսկի, որն, ըստ էության, եգիպտացորենի թորվածք է և տակառներում չի հնեցվում: Կանադական վիսկին հայտնի է դարձել հիմնականում սպիրտային արգելքի պատճառով: Մաքսանենգները Կանադայից զգալի քանակություն են ներմուծել ԱՄՆ։

Կանադական վիսկիի տարբերակիչ հատկանիշը նրա փափկությունն ու թեթև համն է: Այդ ըմպելիքի հիմքն ամենից հաճախ տարեկանն է, ավելի քիչ՝ գարին, եգիպտացորենն ու ցորենը։ Տեղական վիսկիները հիմնականում կուպաժավորում են, իսկ հիմքը, որպես կանոն, արտահայտված բուրմունք չի ունենում։ Վերջին փուլում այն «բուրավետվում» է չհնեցված տարեկանի սպիրտով։
