Անտառը մոտ էր, ու ձեռնափայտ կտրելն առանձնապես մի դժվար բան չէր: Այսինքն, որ ճիշտն ասենք, Համբոյի արած` դժվարություն հարուցող միակ գործը ձեռնափայտ կտրելն էր` առանց հղկելու, միայն կացնով ոստերը տաշտշելով: Ամեն Աստծո առավոտ Համբոն վազում էր գյուղամեջ` մի քիչ լսելու ուրիշներին, բայց ավելի շատ իր լսած-չլսածը գունազարդ ոչ այն է վերապատմելու, որքան մեկնաբանելու` անպայման իր գյուղաքաղաքացիական պարտքը համարելով պարտադրող տոնով հայտարարել իր կարծիքը, որն ավելի շատ ծաղր էր կամ հայհոյանք` բա իմացաք նախաբանով: Ու ամենն այդ` որպես լավություն ոչ միայն գյուղի, այլև աշխարհի հանրությանը. ես` ճշմարտության աղբյուրս, շատ էլ չեմ հասցրել տառերը ճանաչել, ամեն ինչ ասում ու անում եմ միայն ձեզ համար, անձնազոհաբար: Որ Համբոն աշխատելը համարում էր անպատվաբեր իր` իմաստության ակունքի համար, որ անամուսին ու հինգ երեխաների հետ մնացած քրոջ տանը զլանում էր մի մեխ խփել (այլ կերպ օգնել չէր կարող, մեկը լիներ` իրեն օգներ), ոչ մեկին չէր զարմացնում, իսկ պարապությունից հայհոյախառն զավզակություններին մեծ մասը լուրջ չէր վերաբերվում. դե, մեր Համբոն ա, էլի…
Բայց դե, մարդ էին, երբեմն քաղաքավարի, երբեմն` ոչ այնքան, Համբոյին հասկացնել էին տալիս, որ իր ճշմարտությունը, ոնց ասենք, այնքան էլ ճշմարտություն չի, որ ինքը կամ ասում է ասելու համար, կամ կողակցի բզոցով, կամ էլ որ, ասենք, փնովվողից ակնկալած երկու փութ ցորենը (որ բերանը շաղ չտա) այս անգամ չի ստացել: Այ, նման դեպքերում էր, որ ամբողջ գյուղին լեզվին առած Համբոն իսկապես կատաղում էր ու լրբությունից ծնկի վրա կոտրում հերթական ձեռնափայտը:
Ամենավատը ձմեռն էր. գյուղամեջում մարդ չկար: Ու Համբոն հաճախ բացում էր գոմի դուռն ու զրուցում իր մի քանի ընտանի կենդանիների հետ, բողոքում, բամբասում, մի խոսքով` գյուղի մեծի ու փոքրի, հարուստի ու աղքատի բմբուլները քամուն տալիս:
Այդպիսի մի օր էլ, երբ հուզված ճշմարտագիր էր կարդում, Համբոյին թվաց, որ ձին մի տեսակ տարօրինակ է: Մեկ էլ հակարծ պարզ լսեց, որ ձին մաքուր մարդկային լեզվով ասաց.
—Արա Համբո, բայց ինչ օձի կծածն ես…
Համբոն կատաղած ու լեղաճաք նայեց ձիու աչքերին, գույն տվեց-գույն առավ ու տեղում շունչը փչեց:
—Պահ, էս հո մեռավ,- գոմի դռների մեջ իրար խառնվեց հարևանը…
