ԱՄՆ Իլինոյս նահանգից ընտրված սենատոր Մարկ Քըրքը հարցում է արել Թուրքիայում Միացյալ Նահանգների դեսպանի թեկնածու Ջոն Բասին` ակնկալելով ստանալ նրա հստակ դիրքորոշումը Հայոց ցեղասպանության վերաբերյալ: Ինչպես «Արմենպրես»-ին հաղորդեցին ԱՄՆ Հայ դատի հանձնախմբից, Քըրքը հիշեցրել է, որ 2014 թվակ անի հուլիսի 15-ին Սենատի արտաքին հարաբերությունների հանձնաժողովում իր ելույթի ժամանակ Բասն ասել էր, որ «ԱՄՆ կառավարությունը որպես պատմական փաստ է ճանաչում և ոգեկոչում է 1.5 միլիոն հայերին, ովքեր սպանվեցին կամ մահվան աքսորը բռնեցին Օսմանյան կայսրության վերջին օրերի ընթացքում»:
ԱՄՆ սենատորը հարցում է արել, թե արդյոք Բասը կարող է հստակեցնել, որ խումբը կամ խմբերն են պատասխանատու 1.5 միլիոն հայերի սպանության համար, և արդյոք Թուրքիայում ապագա ԱՄՆ դեսպանը կհամաձայնի ԵՄ-ի և ՆԱՏՕ-ի անդամ 11 պետությունների հետ, որոնք պաշտոնապես այդ սպանությունները որակել են որպես Հայոց ցեղասպանություն:
«Որպես դեսպան` Դուք կպաշտպանե՞ք Հայոց ցեղասպանության ժամանակ զոհվածների ժառանգների իրավունքները, որպեսզի նրանք ստանան փոխհատուցում Թուրքիայի Հանրապետությունից»,- նման հարցադրում է կատարել Մարկ Քըրքը: Հիշեցնելով Բասի խոսքերն առ այն, որ դեսպանի կարգավիճակում թուրքական կառավարությանը կոչ կանի հետ վերադարձնել քրիստոնյա փոքրամասնություններից խլված կրոնական հաստատությունները, ինչպես նաև կպաշտպանի կրոնական ազատության իրավունքը Թուրքիայում, Քըրքը խնդրել է հստակեցնել, թե ինչ հստակ քայլեր է նա պատրաստվում կատարել և արդյոք պատրաս տ է բարձրացնել վերոնշյալ խնդիրը թուրքական կառավարության առաջ:
Միացյալ Նահանգների Սենատը արձակուրդի մեկնեց Թուրքիայում ԱՄՆ-ի դեսպանի պաշտոնում Ջոն Բասի թեկնածությունը չհաստատած:
Հայ դատի ԱՄՆ հանձնախումբը ողջունել է Սենատի որոշումը: Հայ դատի ԱՄՆ հանձնախումբը դեմ էր արտահայտվել Ջոն Բասի թեկնածությանը Թուրքիայում ԱՄՆ դեսպանի պաշտոնում` նշելով. «Հայ դատի ԱՄՆ հանձնախումբը չի կարող սատարել Ջոն Բասի թեկնածությունը` հիմնվելով Սենատում նրա ունեցած ելույթների վրա, որոնք Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը ճանաչելու մասին Նախագահ Օբամայի խախտած խոստման մի մասն են և ավելի են ամրապնդում Թուրքիայի «բերան փակող» գերակայությունն ԱՄՆ կառավարության վրա»:
Հուլիսի 29-ին Սենատի արտաքին հարաբերությունների հանձնաժողովի լսումների ժամանակ Հայ դատի հանձնախումբը մի շարք սենատորների միջոցով հարցեր էր ուղղել Ջոն Բասին` ամերիկահայերին հուզող մի շարք խնդիրների շուրջ: Իր ելույթում դիվանագետը խուսափել էր օսմանյան թուրքերի կողմից հայերի կոտորածները ցեղասպանություն բնութագրել և փոխարենը, կիրառելով «ընդհանուր պատմություն» որակավորումը, գովաբանել թուրք վարչապետ Էրդողանի ապրիլիքսաներեքյան «ցավակցական» ուղերձը հայ ժողովրդին:
