Թուրքիայում ԱՄՆ նորանշանակ դեսպան Ջոն Բասսը, խոսելով 1915 թվականի իրադարձությունների մասին, հրաժարվել է կիրառել «Հայոց ցեղասպանություն» ձևակերպումը: Պատասխանելով ԱՄՆ սենատոր Մարկ Քըրքի այն հարցադրմանը, թե Թուրքիայում իր դեսպանության օրոք ինչ քայլեր է ձեռնարկելու Հայոց ցեղասպանության ճանաչման գործում' Ջոն Բասսը, ընդունելով Օսմանյան կայսրության վերջին օրերին 1.5 միլիոն հայերի կոտորածի և մահվան երթի դուրս գալու փաստը, ակնհայտորեն խուսափել է պատասխանել այն պարզ հարցին, թե ովքեր են մեղավոր այդ սպանությունների կազմակերպման համար: Ինչպես տեղեկացնում են ԱՄՆ Հայ դատի հանձնախմբից, Բասսը կոչ է արել Անկարային հաշտվել սեփական անցյալի հետ' հայտարարելով. «Թուրքիայի դեսպանի պաշտոնում իմ պարտականությունը կլինի կոչ անել Թուրքիային հասնելու 1915 թվականի դեպքերի լիակատար, անկեղծ և արդար ճանաչմանը»:

Անդրադառնալով Քըրքի մեկ այլ հարցադրմանը' կապված թուրքական պետության կողմից հայերի, հույների և ասորիների կրոնական սեփականությունները վերադարձնելու հետ, Բասսը հիշատակել է, որ Թուրքիան 1936-2011 թվականների ընթացքում քրիստոնյաներին և հրեաներին պատկանող հազարավոր սեփականություններ է բռնագրավել: Նա հավաստիացրել է, որ իր դեսպանության օրոք աշխատանքներ կանի ինչպես ազգային, այնպես էլ տեղական իշխանությունների հետ, որպեսզի կրկնվի այն հաջողությունը, որը տեղի ունեցավ Դիարբեքիրի հայկական Սուրբ Կիրակոս հայկական եկեղեցու պարագայում:

ԱՄՆ Հայ դատի հանձնախմբի գործադիր տնօրեն Արամ Համփարյանը ողջունել է Մարկ Քըրքի նախաձեռնությունը' համարելով այն հայ ժողովրդի նկատմամբ ամերիկյան համերաշխության արտահայտում: Համփարյանն ընդգծել է նաև, որ Քըրքի հարցադրումն ու Բասսի պատասխանը ևս մեկ անգամ ապացուցեցին, որ Բարաք Օբաման պատասխանատվություն է կրում Հայոց ցեղասպանության վերաբերյալ ԱՄՆ կառավարության որդեգրած տերմինաբանության հարցում:
