The National Interest-ը գրում է, որ Արևմուտքի թիվ մեկ հնդիրն այժմ Ռուսաստանը հակառակորդից դաշնակից դարձնելն է ուկրաինական ճգնաժամի կարգավորման ճանապարհով, քանի որ ներկայիս առճակատումը կարող է բերել ռուս-ամերիկյան ու ռուս-եվրոպական հարաբերությունների բազմամյա վատթարացման: ԱՄՆ-ն ու ԵՄ-ն պետք է հիշեն, որ գոյություն ունեն բազմաթիվ միջազգային կարևոր հարցեր ու խնդիրներ, որոնք անկարելի է լուծել առանց Մոսկվայի մասնակցության: Դրանց շարքում` միջուկային զենքի չտարածման միջազգային վերահսկողությունը ահաբեկչության դեմ միջազգային պայքարի կազմակերպումը, Արկտիկայի պահպանությունը, պայքարը կլիմայի փոփոխությունների ու այլ էկոլոգիական խնդիրների դեմ և այլն: Պարբերականն առաջարկում է մի պահ մտածել, թե ինչքան դրական արդյուքների կարելի է հասնել, եթե Ռուսաստանն ու Արևմուտքը մեկմեկու ընկալեն որպես գործընկերներ և ոչ թե որպես հակառակորդներ կամ որ ավելի վատ է` թշնամիներ: Բացասական հարաբերությունների ներկայիս վիճակը կարող է պահպանվել երկար տարիներ, քանի որ միամտություն կարելի է համարել այն, որ ՌԴ հարաբերությունները ԵՄ ու ԱՄՆ հետ կարող են նորմալանալ ուկրաինական ճգնաժամի լուծումից անմիջապես հետո: Պարբերականը նաև զգուշացնում է, որ տնտեսական պատժամիջոցների կամ տնտեսական զենքի կիրառումը պատժամիջոցների տեսքով, որոնք կիրառվեցին Ռուսաստանի դեմ կարող է բացասաբար ազդել ողջ Արևմուտքի տնտեսական զարգացման վրա: Իսկ ռուս-ամերիկյան ու ռուս-եվրոպական հարաբերությունների վատացումից կարող է օգտվել Չինաստանը և այլ երկրներ իրենց տնտեսական հեռանկարները կապելով այլընտրանքային տնտեսական կառույցների, օրինակ` ԲՐԻՔՍ-ի կազմեկրպության հետ: Ուստիև, ինչպես պարբերականն է եզրակացնում, Արևմուտքի ու մասնավորապես ԱՄՆ համար առավել խելամիտ կլինի հրաժարվել “լարվածության ավելացումից” ու “ջանքերի ավելացումից”` կապված Ռուսաստանի մեկուսացման հետ ու հաշվարկել, թե նման զարգացումների դեպքում ինչ հնարավոր հետևանքներ են հնարավոր:
