ԱՄՆ-ի նախագահ Բարաք Օբաման Ազատության նախագահական մեդալները շնորհելու ընթացքում սեր է խոստովանել հոլիվուդյան դերասանուհի, «Օսկարի» եռակի մրցանակակիր Մերիլ Սթրիփին, տեղեկացնում է «Արմենպրես»-ը՝ հղում անելով The Washington Post-ին:
«Ես հրապարակավ հայտարարում եմ, որ սիրում եմ Մերիլ Սթրիփին: Այդ մասին գիտեն և՛ նրա ամուսինը, և՛ Միշելը»,- ասել է պետության ղեկավարը: Նա նշել է, որ դերասանուհու տաղանդն այնքան հզոր է, որ «իր հավասարը չունի»: Հանձնելով պարգևը՝ Օբաման գրկել է Սթրիփին և համբուրել նրա այտը, ինչպես և մնացած բոլոր դափնեկիրներին:
Սպիտակ տանը կայացած արարողության ժամանակ պարգև է հանձնվել «Գրեմմի»-ի 25 մրցանակների դափնեկիր Սթիվի Ուանդերին, որին Օբաման անվանել է երաժշտության հսկա, նշում է The Telegraph-ը:
Ազատության նախագահական մեդալներ են հանձնվել նաև ևս 17 հոգու, որոնց թվում են՝ հեռուստահաղորդավար Թոմ Բրոքաուն, չիլիացի գրող Իսաբել Ալյենդեն, դերասանուհի Մառլո Թոմասը, նշանավոր ֆիզիկոս, Մասաչուսեթսի տեխնոլոգիական ինստիտուտի 83-ամյա պրոֆեսոր Միլդրեդ Դրոսելհաուզը, տնտեսագետ և Նոբելյան մրցանակի դափնեկիր Ռոբերտ Սոլոուն և կոմպոզիտոր Սթիվեն Սոնդհայմը: Բալետի արտիստ Ալվին Էյլին, որը մահացել է 1989 թվականին, պարգևատրվել է հետմահու:
Օբաման նշել է, որ պարգևը հանձնվում է նրանց, ովքեր ԱՄՆ-ը դարձնում են «ավելի ուժեղ, ավելի իմաստուն, ավելի մարդասեր և ավելի գեղեցիկ», գրում է The Daily Mail-ը: «Լավացնելով աշխարհը, նրանք ավելի լավն են դարձնում մեզնից յուրաքանչյուրին»,- ընդգծել է պետության ղեկավարը:
Ազատության նախագահական մեդալը Կոնգրեսի մեդալի հետ միասին ԱՄՆ-ի բարձրագույն պարգևն է, որը հանձնվում է քաղաքացիական անձանց: Այն ամեն տարի շնորհվում է այն մարդկանց, «ովքեր նշանակալի ավանդ են ներդրել ԱՄՆ-ի անվտանգության և ազգային շահերի պաշտպանության, ամբողջ աշխարհում խաղաղության պաշտպանության գործում, ինչպես նաև ԱՄՆ-ի և աշխարհի հասարակական և մշակութային կյանքում»:
Մեդալը հիմնվել է 1945 թվականին Միացյալ Նահանգների 33-րդ նախագահ Հարրի Տրումենի կողմից: Տարբեր ժամանակներում պարգևների են արժանացել հասարակական գործիչ և ֆիլանտրոպ մայր Թերեզան, արվամոլների իրավունքների համար պայքարի մարտիկ Հարվի Միլկը (հետմահու), ինչպես նաև քաղաքական գործիչ և ավելի ուշ Սպիտակ տան 40-րդ ղեկավար Ռոնալդ Ռեյգանը, հաղորդել է ՌԻԱ Նովոստին:
