1945թ. այս օրը Սիրիայի Հալեպում ծնվեց ԽՍՀՄ-ից անկախություն հռչակած Հայաստանի Հանրապետության առաջին նախագահ (1991-1998թթ.) Լևոն Տեր-Պետրոսյանը:
Հրաժարական է տվել 1998թ. փետրվար 3-ին՝ տնտեսական և քաղաքական պատճառներով ստեղծված ժողովրդական հուզումներից հետո։ Նախագահի պաշտոնին նրան հաջորդել է մինչ այդ վարչապետի պաշտոնը զբաղեցնող Ռոբերտ Քոչարյանը:
1946թ. ընտանիքի հետ տեղափոխվել է Երևան, ավարտել միջնակարգ դպրոցը, որից հետո 1968-ին ԵՊՀ-ի բանասիրական ֆակուլտետի արևելագիտության բաժինը՝ արաբերեն լեզու և գրականություն մասնագիտությամբ։ Ասպիրանտական շրջանը անցել է Լենինգրադում, 1972թ. Լենինգրադի համալսարանում պաշտպանել է թեկնածուական, իսկ 1987թ. նույն համալսարանում՝ դոկտորական դիսերտացիան, ստացել բանասիրական գիտությունների դոկտորի գիտական աստիճան։
Տիրապետում է հայերեն, ռուսերեն, ֆրանսերեն, անգլերեն, գերմաներեն, արաբերեն, ինչպես նաև մի քանի մեռած լեզուների։ Հեղինակ է ավելի քան 70 գիտական աշխատությունների: 2005 և 2007 թվականներին հրատարակվել են կիլիկյան շրջանին վերաբերող նրա վերջին՝ «Խաչակիրները և հայերը» երկու ստվար հատորներով հրապարակված պատմաքաղաքագիտական հետազոտությունը։ 2006թ. լույս է տեսել նրա քաղաքական ու քաղաքագիտական բնույթի ելույթների, հոդվածների և հարցազրույցների «Ընտրանի» ժողովածուն։
Քաղաքական գործունեությունն սկսել է 1960-ական թվականներից, 1966-ին ձերբակալվել և մեկ շաբաթ կալանքի տակ է պահվել ապրիլի 24-ի ցույցին ակտիվ մասնակցության համար։ 1988-ի փետրվարից ղեկավարել է Մատենադարանի Ղարաբաղ կոմիտեն, մայիսից ընդգրկվել Ղարաբաղյան շարժման Հայաստանի կոմիտեի կազմում, դարձել նրա ազդեցիկ անդամներից մեկը։
Դարձել է Հայոց համազգային շարժման հիմնադիր անդամ, նրա վարչության նախագահ։ 1989թ. օգոստոսին ընտրվել է ՀԽՍՀ Գերագույն խորհրդի պատգամավոր։ 1990թ. հուլիսին Լևոն Տեր-Պետրոսյան դարձել է ԳԽ-ի նախագահության անդամ։ 1990թ. մայիսին կրկին ընտրվել է Գերագույն խորհրդի պատգամավոր, նույն թվականի օգոստոսի 4-ին՝ Գերագույն խորհրդի նախագահ։
Լևոն Տեր-Պետրոսյանը 1991 թ. հոկտեմբերի 16-ին ձայների մեծամասնությամբ (83, 4%) ընտրվել է Հայաստանի Հանրապետության նախագահ։ Նույն պաշտոնում վերընտրվել է նաև 1996թ. սեպտեմբերի 22-ին։ Ընտրությունների արդյունքները ընդդիմությունը չընդունեց և փաստեր բերեց, որ դրանք կեղծվել են: Ընդդիմությունը մի քանի օր բողոքի ցույցեր արեց, որի գագաթնակետը հասավ սեպտեմբերի 25-ին, երբ ցուցարարները ներխուժեցին Ազգային ժողովի շենք, որից հետո բազմաթիվ ընդդիմադիր գործիչներ ու ցուցարարներ ձերբակալվեցին, իսկ Երևան մտցվեցին բանակի ստորաբաժանումներ ծանր զրահատեխնիկայով:
Իր պաշտոնավարման ընթացքում արգելվել է Հայ հեղափոխական դաշնակցության գործունեությունը, յոթ պարբերականներ, «Ազատություն» ռադիոկայանի հեռարձակումը հայկական ռադիոցանցում: Լևոն Տեր-Պետրոսյանի իշխանության տարիներին ու նրա ղեկավարությամբ Հայաստանը դարձավ անկախ պետություն, կատարվեցին համակարգային բարեփոխումներ, ազատագրվեց Լեռնային Ղարաբաղը և ձեռք բերեց դե ֆակտո անկախ պետության կարգավիճակ, միաժամանակ երկիրը անցավ սոցիալ-տնտեսական և էներգետիկ ճգնաժամի միջով, որը ժողովրդական լեզվում կոչվում է նաև «մութ ու ցուրտ տարիներ»։
Լևոն Տեր-Պետրոսյանն ամուսնացած է, ունի որդի և երեք թոռ։
