Շառլի Էբդոյի հարձակումները պատմության մեջ կհիշվեն նրանով, որ դրանք հանկարծակի տեղի չունեցան և դրանք իրականացրած հանցագործների հետ չեն գնա գերեզման: Նրանք եկան ինչ-որ տեղից, ինչ-որ ժամանակ և ինչ-որ տեղ ապագայում՝ հեռավոր կամ մոտիկ, նրանք որսի դուրս կգան և կրկին կհարձակվեն մեր վրա: Կրկին ու կրկին, մինչև մենք վերջ չդնեք մեր կույր անուշադրությանը, որի շնորհիվ մենք հարմարավետորեն պատսպարվում ենք: Փարիզի սրտում և հրեական շուկայում հարձակումները առանձին դեպքեր չէին, և, իրականում, մարտահրավեր էին ոչ այնքան ազատ խոսքի կամ մեր արժեքների համար: Դրանք մարտահրավերներ էին մեր կրոնների՝ քրիստոնեական, թե հրեական, մեր ինքնության, պատմության, ֆրանսիական մեծ հեղափոխության, Գերմանիայի և լուսավորչականության ցանկացած այլ ժամանակաշրջանի համար: Դրանք մարտահրավերներ էին հենց մեր գոյության համար, և մենք պարտավոր ենք դա հասկանալ: Որպես անհնազանդ ազատ խոսքի խորհրդանիշ՝ մեր գրիչները օդում բարձրացնելով, մենք ցուցադրում ենք մեր անտարբերությունը սպառնալիքի մաշտաբի և գլոբալության նկատմամբ, որը կոտորածի հետք է թողնում իր ետևից: Խնդիրը, մեծագույն խնդիրը, որին մենք բախվում ենք մեր եվրոպացի քաղաքացիների ծայրահեղականացումը չէ որպես այդպիսին, այլ ծայրահեղականացման պատճառը: Ի սկզբանե խաղաղ բնակչությունը և մեր հասարակական կյանքի մի մասը՝ եվրոպական սունի մահմեդականների համայնքները Գերմանիայում, Մեծ Բրիտանիայում, Բելգիայում և այլուր, գնալով ավելի ու ավելի են ծայրահեղականացվում Պարսկական ծոցից ներկրվող, գրավիչ և վտանգավոր գաղափարներով, որոնք ավելի արագ են ներկրվում, քան նավթը: Այս տեսանկյունից մեր քաղաքացիները, ում մենք ընկալում ենք որպես նորմալ, վերածվում են չարիքի, գնում են մարտերի Սիրիայի և Իրաքի անապատներում և պատրեազմը հետ են բերում մեր փողոցներ:
Բավականին զավեշտալի է այն, որ հենց խոսքի ազատությունն և այլ բոլոր ազատություններն, որոնք երաշխավորված են մեզ համար, միաժամանակ պաշտպանում են ատելություն պարունակող խոսքը, և ատելությամբ լի, տգետ իբն Վահաբի ուսմունքները պարարտ հիմք են գտնում մեր հողերում, մեր փողոցներում, մեր արվարձաններում:
Թույլ տալով անգլիացի քարոզիչ Անյեմ Չոուդարին քարոզել Լոնդոնի փողոցներում, իրավունք տալով թուրք քարոզիչներին ազատորեն տարածել այն ամենն ինչ ցանկանում են, թույլ տալով Ֆրանսիայի երկերեսանի հյուսիս-աֆրիկյան հոգևորականներին ասել մի բան ֆրանսերենով և մեկ այլ բան արաբերենով՝ մենք վտանգի ենք ենթարկում մեր խոսքի ազատությունը և ոչ միայն: Մենք՝ եվրոպացիներս, պետք է հասկանանք, որ իսլամի զուսպ հետևորդները հեշտ զոհ են ծայրահեղ իսլամիստների ուսմունքների համար, եթե նրանք թողնվեն առանց հսկողության: Սա կարող է թվալ ոչ եվրոպական, ոչ ֆրանսիական, անքաղաքակիրթ, բայց մեր <<եվրոպացիությունը>>, <<ֆրանսիացիությունը>> և քաղաքակրթությունը պաշտապնելու նպատակով, մենք պետք է զսպենք և վերահսկենք անհանդուրժողական խոսքի հասանելիությունն մեր բնակչությանը, քանի որ անհանդուրժողական խոսքի ազատությունն զրկում է մեզ մեր ազատ և ազատ ապրելու արտահայտվելու իրավունքից:
Ակնհայտ է, որ մենք նախընտրում են պայքարել երկրորդային ախտաբանական օջախների դեմ, այլ ոչ թե փնտրել քաղցկեղի պատճառը: Քաղցկեղը, որն այժմ արագ աճում է և մեզ դեպի գերեզման տանում, օգտագործելով մեր իսկ արժեքներն ու գործիքները՝ խոսելու և ցանկացած բան սովորեցնելու մեր ազատությունը, ցանկացած անձի և ցանկացած տեղում: Սա պետք է դադարեցնել և դադարեցնել հենց հիմա: Եթե դա չդադարեցվի այսօր, ապա չի լինի այլևս ‹‹վաղը»: Եվրոպայի ապագան պայծառ է, այն պետք է լինի պայծառ և մենք պետք է անենք ամեն ինչ դրա համար:
