Հայրենիքի սահմանները պաշտպանելու ընթացքում հակառակորդի գնդակից զոհված հայ զինծառայող Վարդան Մկրտչյանը բանակ էր զորակոչվել իր ծննդյան օրը: Այս մասին ՀՀ նախագահական նստավայրում տեղի ունեցած պարգևատրման արարողությունից հետո լրագրողների հետ զրույցում ասաց զոհված զինվորի հայրը՝ Մարտին Մկրտչյանը: «Նա ավարտեց Ճգնաժամային կառավարման պետական ակադեմիայի առաջին կուրսը և զորակոչվեց բանակ այն հույսով, որ պետք է վերադառնար և շարունակեր ուսումը: Բայց հունվարի 3-ին՝ այդ չարաբաստիկ օրը, նա զոհվեց՝ մարտի բռնվելով ադրբեջանցիների հետ»,- «Արմենպրես»-ի հաղորդմամբ՝ նշեց նա՝ գոհունակությամբ ընդգծելով, որ իր որդին իր հետևից թողել է հայ տղամարդուն վայել մեծ անուն և հարգանք:
Վարդան Մկրտչյանը զոհվել է հունվարի 3-ին Ասկերանի շրջանում, երբ հայկական ուժերը հետ են մղել հակառակորդի կողմից ձեռնարկված հետախուզադիվերսիոն ներթափանցման փորձը: Մարտին Մկրտչյանն ուներ ևս մեկ զավակ, ով պետք է այս ամիս բանակ զորակոչվեր, սակայն քանի որ եղբայրը զոհվել է, նրան չեն զորակոչել: «Նման օրենք կա, որ վերջին զավակին չեն զորակոչում»,- մանրամասնեց Մկրտչյանը:
Մկրտչյանը որդու հետ խոսել է գրեթե ամեն օր: Նրանք զրուցել են նաև հունվարի 3-ին, որից ժամեր անց Վարդանը զոհվել է: «Նա ինձ սահմանին լարվածության մասին ոչինչ չասաց: Ասում էր, որ ամեն ինչ հանգիստ է ու որևէ խնդիր չկա: Նա էր մեզ հույս տալիս»,- եզրափակեց զոհված զինծառայողի հայրը:
Հայրենիքի սահմանները պաշտպանելու ժամանակ ցուցաբերած խիզախության համար Վարդան Մկրտչյանը ՀՀ Նախագահի կողմից այսօր հետմահու պարգևատրվեց Արիության մեդալով: Մինչ այդ Մկրտչյանը հետմահու Արիության մեդալով էր պարգևատրվել ԼՂՀ նախագահ Բակո Սահակյանի կողմից:
